A plan to end the occupation
The Ghost crew and local resistance united to overthrow Governor Pryce's administration. They sought to capture the Imperial headquarters dome, draw Imperial forces into it, and remove the occupation's military infrastructure from the planet.
Thrawn threatens civilian districts
Thrawn arrived aboard the Chimaera and threatened the people of Capital City unless Ezra surrendered. The escalation exposed the importance of protecting civilians even as the rebels gained control of Imperial installations.
Purrgil turn the battle
Ezra arranged for hyperspace-traveling purrgil to confront Thrawn's fleet. The creatures disabled ships and carried the Chimaera, Thrawn and Ezra away to the distant world of Peridea in another galaxy, leaving Lothal without its principal Imperial commander.
Anthropological assessment
The liberation depended on both organized resistance and relationships with nonhuman life. Ezra chose disappearance to protect his community, and Lothal's subsequent freedom was sustained by the actions of the people who remained.

Lothal is liberated
Documented historical sequence
The Ghost crew and local allies took action against Governor Pryce's military occupation of Lothal. Ezra Bridger summoned purrgil that seized Thrawn's Star Destroyer and carried both the vessel and Ezra into hyperspace. Lothal gained freedom, although Ezra's whereabouts became unknown.
Institutions, identity and material life
Local people participated in liberation rather than simply watching the Ghost crew defeat a villain. Ezra's bond with purrgil also challenges a purely humanoid account of political change: an animal species materially altered the battle without becoming a formal combatant in the Alliance.
Why 1 BBY, rather than 0 BBY?
Recent Star Wars chronologies use the Battle of Yavin as the zero point. Rogue One and events immediately before that battle belong to 1 BBY rather than a separate 0 BBY year. The character or story illustration at the top provides context, not a photograph of the entire event.
