Chronology note: The year is well established, but separate plotlines in the same year may not have an exact relative order. Every page distinguishes published narrative facts from anthropological interpretation.
A rescue from Imperial custody
Governor Arihnda Pryce captured Hera Syndulla while Imperial operations intensified on Lothal. Kanan, Ezra, Sabine and other allies mounted a rescue from the occupied industrial installations that supported Thrawn's TIE Defender project.
A fuel depot ignites
As the rebels escaped, a massive explosion engulfed the fuel installation. Kanan used the Force to hold the blast back and push Hera and his companions away from danger, accepting that he would not survive the attempt.
The crew must continue
Kanan's death devastated Ezra, Hera and their chosen family. The surviving crew needed to process their grief while continuing a campaign whose objectives had not changed. The loss also challenged Ezra's understanding of what Jedi training and sacrifice required.
Anthropological assessment
The event illustrates how a small political cell combines military organization with intimate family bonds. The death of one member affects both practical leadership and the community's capacity to make meaning from its sacrifices.

Kanan dies saving Hera
Original story and chronology
After the Empire captured Hera Syndulla during the Lothal campaign, Kanan Jarrus and his companions attempted a rescue at an Imperial fuel facility. The rebels succeeded in freeing her, but an explosion endangered the departing crew. Kanan held back the blast with the Force so Hera and the others could escape, sacrificing his life. This moment preceded the later liberation of Lothal.
Social history and political consequences
Kanan's relationship to the Ghost crew was built on apprenticeship, friendship and chosen family. His decision treated protection of others as an ethical obligation rather than an attempt to regain the public military standing the Jedi had lost. Fuel infrastructure itself became a contested site where Imperial economic power and rebel survival intersected.
Why 1 BBY rather than 0 BBY?
These events take place shortly before the Battle of Yavin. Lucasfilm's modern dating convention uses the Battle of Yavin as year zero, not a full 0 BBY year. Previous duplicate pages with a 0 BBY suffix will be redirected to the 1 BBY entries.
