The Sith Civil War ends and the Old Sith Wars close

The last organized remnants of Revan and Malak's Sith Empire disintegrate, allowing the Republic to reclaim former Sith-held territory and ending the fifty-year Old Sith Wars cycle.

By 3950 BBY, the Sith Civil War that followed Darth Malak's defeat had exhausted the remaining warlord states descended from Revan's empire. The Sith Triumvirate had already been destroyed during the Dark Wars. Continued infighting finished what Republic victories had begun, and the Galactic Republic reclaimed worlds that had remained under Sith control since the Great Sith War. Later historians used this endpoint to close the broader Old Sith Wars period.

OLD SITH WARS CLOSE

Documented chronology and evidence limits

Legends chronologies mark 3950 BBY as the closing of the Sith Civil War and, by extension, the Old Sith Wars period. After Malak's defeat in 3956 and the destruction of the Sith Triumvirate during 3951, surviving fragments of their regime finally lost the ability to function as a coherent competing state. Republic authority returned to some territories that had long remained under Sith control. This is a periodization marker across decades of conflict, not one documented ceremonial peace treaty signed by every Sith group.

Anthropology: institutions and everyday consequences

Historical period labels simplify long, uneven processes. An official end to a particular conflict can coexist with political violence elsewhere, continuing loss and unresolved grievances. The hidden Empire under Vitiate survived outside the Republic's view; the Kanz Disorders likewise continued. Both facts demonstrate why stating 'the Sith ended in 3950' would be false. The Republic's recovery depended not only on surviving battles but on rebuilding communications, government, transport and daily social relationships.

The Republic recovers territory without defeating one final central ruler

By the end, there was no unified Sith government to negotiate with or overthrow.

Fragmentation and attrition made reconquest possible.

One historical period ends while another Sith state survives unseen

Republic historians could reasonably describe the known Sith wars as over.

That conclusion was limited by what the Republic did not know about Dromund Kaas.

Anthropological assessment

Historical periodization depends on the archive available to the people naming the period.

A society can declare an era finished while other political communities, hidden from its records, experience continuity rather than rupture.

A retrospective endpoint, not the disappearance of the Sith

The Old Sith Wars label encompasses several distinct conflicts over decades. Their closing date in 3950 BBY follows the defeat of Malak, the destruction of the Sith Triumvirate and the further exhaustion of surviving warlord factions. Republic forces recovered control over territories, but there was no single central enemy capital whose capture ended every component of the wider historical period.

This distinction matters because period labels are tools used by later historians. To people experiencing events, one conflict might have ended while another persisted nearby. The concealed Empire of Vitiate also remained intact, outside ordinary Republic knowledge. Declaring an endpoint for the Old Sith Wars therefore does not mean the Sith tradition ceased to exist or that the galaxy entered an age free from all Sith power. It identifies the end of a specific set of historically connected wars.

Does 'Old Sith Wars end' mean there were no more Sith?

No. The label closes a later historical grouping of conflicts, while Vitiate's hidden Empire and subsequent Sith movements continued.
