In 382 BBY, Jedi Master Zallah Macri and Padawan Kevmo Zink investigated stolen Force-related artifacts and the Path of the Open Hand on Dalna. During the mission, the Path's Mother used the Leveler, a dangerous member of the Nameless species, and both Jedi were killed. Their deaths demonstrated a threat that the Jedi did not yet understand.
The Path's new leadership
Elecia Zeveron, known as the Mother, had transformed the organization into a community deeply suspicious of Jedi use of the Force. Her public teaching claimed the Force should remain free from intervention. Her private actions, however, included obtaining dangerous artifacts and suppressing information.
An investigation becomes lethal
Macri and Zink arrived on Dalna as Jedi investigators and encountered a society whose members were often sincere about their beliefs. Kevmo formed a personal attachment to Marda Ro. The growing trust concealed the Mother's willingness to use a lethal creature against Force-sensitive visitors.
The Leveler reveals a new danger
The creature's effects on Jedi were unlike conventional weapons. The deaths showed that attacks on Force-sensitive people could be enabled by organisms or techniques unknown to the Order. This knowledge later became central to the conflict involving the Nihil.
Anthropological assessment
A religious movement's language of peace may coexist with coercion and secret violence by its leadership. The event is particularly useful for separating followers' sincerity from the policies imposed by a charismatic authority.

The Leveler on Dalna: history and interpretation
Historical actors and the record
In Path of Deceit, Jedi Zallah Macri and Kevmo Zink investigate the Path's activity and disappear after facing the Leveler, a creature later recognized as one of the Nameless. The attack was not a conventional duel between human opponents and exposed a danger the Jedi did not yet understand.
Anthropological perspective
The Path's leaders exploited asymmetrical knowledge: the Jedi could recognize a hostile religious movement but not anticipate the special effect of its creature on Force-users. The incident invites questions about how institutions learn from missing personnel and how secrecy blocks shared risk assessment.
Primary source and chronological qualification
This is Canon High Republic history; its story date and the book's publication date are not interchangeable. The Phase II stories take place earlier in-universe than the Phase I books despite being released later. Unshown scenes and uncertain numerical figures are not added as facts.
