Border fighting becomes a war

The Dark Nest Crisis escalated into the Swarm War in 36 ABY. The Chiss Ascendancy and the Killik Colony confronted one another across the Unknown Regions. The Galactic Alliance and Jedi Order struggled to intervene because some Force-users had become emotionally and politically entangled with the Colony.

The Dark Nest manipulates both sides

Gorog, the secretive Dark Nest associated with Lomi Plo, exploited the dispute. Fear of infiltration and blurred loyalties deepened suspicion among participants. At multiple points the Jedi had to distinguish defending sentient lives from endorsing all actions performed by the Killiks or Chiss.

The Battle of Tenupe and its consequences

Fighting culminated in the conflict at Tenupe. Luke Skywalker confronted Lomi Plo and the influence of the Dark Nest. The principal war ended, and the Killiks were pushed back toward the Unknown Regions. The violence nevertheless left unresolved questions about the rights and interests of the people involved.

A new public role for Luke

During this period Luke publicly claimed the status of Grand Master of the Jedi Order. The decision clarified his authority as the Order faced disagreements among its members and governments. It was a response to a leadership problem within a reconstructed religious institution.

Anthropological assessment

The war illustrates how security claims can harden into collective punishment when different social forms cannot be understood on their own terms. Jedi efforts were constrained by a conflict between protecting individuals and exercising power over an entire species.
