Treaty of Coruscant is signed

Evidence, timing and source limits

The Treaty of Coruscant was signed in 3653 BBY after Imperial forces occupied the Republic capital during the peace negotiations. Its terms ended the Great Galactic War, called for withdrawal of Republic forces from contested battlefronts and required the Republic to surrender claims to allied or occupied systems. Imperial control of Coruscant ended as the Sith withdrew. The agreement did not establish a lasting friendship or prevent covert hostilities. Its breakdown is generally dated to 3641 BBY, after a long period known as the Cold War.

Anthropological interpretation

A treaty signed under threat can be legally consequential without creating a shared sense of legitimacy. The Republic's obligations shifted the risks of war onto former allies whom it could no longer protect. Territory, family movement, garrisons and access to aid were affected by legal decisions made at distant negotiating tables. The aftermath is an example of how formal peace may redistribute violence and insecurity rather than eliminate them.

How to separate evidence from later interpretation

The event is conventionally situated in 3653 BBY, within the Great Galactic War or Cold War. Some archival sources offer only an approximate year or a retrospective account. Check whether a claim describes the contemporary public view, a later discovery or the historian's interpretation before treating them as equivalent.

Anthropological assessment

Treaties do not simply stop violence. They redistribute territory, obligations, legitimacy, and resentment, often creating the political conditions for the next conflict.

Legal settlement does not equal reconciliation

The Treaty of Coruscant was accepted after the Sith demonstrated that they could hold the Republic's capital under threat. The Old Republic's official historical account describes conditions that forced Republic troops and Jedi to leave territories whose inhabitants still faced pressure from the Empire. The treaty therefore ended the formal Great Galactic War while redistributing vulnerability across the galaxy. It should not be described as a voluntary alliance or a settlement that every Republic system welcomed.

The aftermath is historically important because documents can change political relationships without ending personal loyalties or local combat. Republic institutions remained and some Sith forces withdrew, yet espionage, proxy fighting, and arguments over abandoned allies continued. A reader studying treaty-making should distinguish a valid official agreement, the conditions under which it was signed, and the lived consequences of compliance. This entry is not the same as the separate sacking or the beginning of the later Cold War, even though these developments belong to the same crisis.

A coerced signature can change the lives of distant allies

The Treaty of Coruscant ended the Great Galactic War after the Sith demonstrated that they could occupy and devastate the Republic capital. The official Republic Holonet explains that the Senate accepted military withdrawal from worlds previously considered its allies. This is more than a change to a map's border colors. Republic withdrawal changed which governments could rely on troop support, transport protection and strategic aid. The inhabitants of affected systems did not necessarily participate in the decision made for them.

Treaties can produce legal obligations under circumstances of overwhelming force without creating lasting mutual trust. The Empire's narrative stresses its victory; the Republic's official account emphasizes necessity and loss. Neither summary provides every clause of the signed legal instrument, and neither should be used to invent precise concessions not described in the record. The resulting Cold War developed through intelligence work and conflicts on worlds outside the formal battlefield.

IDS considers the redistribution of insecurity when rulers declare peace. Some communities experienced reduced large-scale warfare while others lost the protection of a distant patron. The occupation of Coruscant explains why the Senate signed, and Ord Mantell's later fighting shows why an imperial-republic ceasefire did not equal peaceful politics on every Republic world. The treaty's signing date must remain separate from the later collapse of the truce.

Source challenge: Did signing the treaty immediately restore all of the Republic's former alliances?

What the evidence shows: No. The Republic accepted withdrawal from some allied systems, producing new security problems despite the declared peace.

Official story text supports the identified setting and events, but precise BBY dates, private dialogue and complete witness accounts may require additional primary-game or reference-book checking.
