The Treaty did not produce reconciliation. Instead, Republic and Sith institutions entered a Cold War of espionage, proxy conflict, militarization, contested worlds, and preparation for renewed open fighting.

The Republic–Sith Cold War begins

Evidence, timing and source limits

The 3653 BBY Treaty of Coruscant ended the Great Galactic War but did not resolve rivalry between Republic and Sith Imperial institutions. Both states rebuilt armed forces and engaged in espionage, frontier competition, political pressure and proxy fighting. Some former Republic allies were left under Imperial control after the treaty. The Cold War refers to this formal but unstable arrangement, not complete peace without casualties. The distinction between covert fighting and open war becomes increasingly difficult near 3642; the treaty's formal dissolution is dated to 3641.

Anthropological interpretation

Cold wars often sustain military and intelligence institutions while denying populations an unambiguous state of emergency. Frontier settlements, defectors and occupied worlds experienced coercion even though central capitals were no longer formally at war. Political language determined whether the same armed action was described as a security incident, local insurgency or renewed military invasion. Comparing these labels reveals how law and public memory influence which violence becomes officially visible.

How to separate evidence from later interpretation

The event is conventionally situated in 3653 BBY, within the Great Galactic War or Cold War. Some archival sources offer only an approximate year or a retrospective account. Check whether a claim describes the contemporary public view, a later discovery or the historian's interpretation before treating them as equivalent.

Anthropological assessment

A formal peace can preserve war structures beneath the threshold of declared combat. Institutions continue organizing society around an enemy even when armies temporarily stop advancing.

SWTOR · diplomatic and military history

A treaty divides the galaxy rather than reconciling it

The Treaty of Coruscant ended the decades-long Great Galactic War on paper but imposed a new political geography. Republic forces withdrew from battlefields and long-standing allies that had relied on their protection. The Empire gained room to consolidate territorial advances and extend its influence. The Republic remained a functioning state with a Senate, armies and an allied Jedi Order, yet the settlement was experienced by many communities as abandonment rather than a guarantee of peace.

The period named the Cold War consisted of rivalry below the threshold of a general declared conflict. Intelligence work, propaganda, contested borders and support for rival political groups became central tools. The official SWTOR account describes both governments preparing for the possibility that hostilities would resume. The term Cold War therefore names a set of practices, not the disappearance of violence from every planet.

Peace is uneven across the galaxy

A treaty can reduce fighting between central armies while increasing insecurity for populations caught between them. States may recognize a boundary that local communities experience as a sudden change of obligation, patrols or access to supplies. The consequences of negotiated territory are not evenly distributed.

Institutions reorganize around a permanent opponent

Even during formal peace, rival powers maintained intelligence agencies and military planning because neither trusted the other. The Republic and Sith Empire organized diplomacy, economies and education around expectations of another confrontation.

Did the Treaty require the Sith Empire to abandon all its gains?

No. The Republic accepted major concessions and troop withdrawals. The Empire consolidated power over territories and former Republic allies.

Historical context: The Cold War settlement

A treaty can suspend open fighting while leaving competing military institutions and territorial claims intact.

Anthropological perspective: Political authority depends on institutions, resources and collective loyalties as well as military power. This is analysis of the documented event, not a claim that additional scenes occurred.

Evidence check: what does this date establish?

The date places the event in the published Legends chronology, but does not independently establish every battle phase, civilian experience or unnamed participant's motives. Read the sources below for their documented scope.

Great Galactic War · expanded source analysis

The war continues under a different name

The Cold War follows the treaty that formally closes the Great Galactic War, but the Republic and Sith Empire retain incompatible strategic ambitions. Open battles decline in some places while intelligence campaigns, border conflicts, and client politics persist. The official Galactic History describes the result as a divided galaxy rather than a settlement of the original ideological and political rivalry. In this context the word cold is a description of relations between major powers, not evidence that violence vanished.

Frontier communities are often exposed to risks that residents of a political capital experience only through reports or debate. Withdrawal of a Republic garrison may be viewed by one government as treaty compliance and by local allies as abandonment. Such competing judgments help explain why tensions outlive a formal signature. The start date around 3653 BBY should also be distinguished from later events used to mark a return to open Galactic War, whose specific classification may differ among reference chronologies.

Publisher's timeline: Read the official Galactic History transcript, which places this development in relation to the blockade, Republic war effort, and settlement. Gnost-Dural speaks from a Jedi perspective; his moral interpretation must be distinguished from documented events.
