An unexpected warning from the Force

Luke Skywalker encountered an Aing-Tii object called the Codex, which magnified his presence in the Force. Members of the Lost Tribe of Sith on Kesh became aware of him and learned that the Jedi Order had been restored. Their leaders considered him a major obstacle to their ambitions to conquer the wider galaxy.

A political mission becomes a hunt for Ship

Grand Lord Darish Vol and the Circle of Lords approved a strike force under Lady Olaris Rhea, including her apprentice Vestara Khai. The group planned to track down and kill Luke, but Ship abruptly departed Kesh after coming under the influence of the entity Abeloth. Recovering the sphere became another urgent objective, and the Sith pursued it into the Maw.

An environment that kills intruders

The strike team entered the dangerous region surrounding Abeloth's world. The planet's hostile living environment and the entity's manipulation depleted their supplies and killed members of the force. Vestara began to recognize that the mysterious woman claiming to offer protection was not an ordinary isolated inhabitant. Her observations conflicted with the assumptions held by senior Sith.

The assault on the Skywalkers fails

The survivors traveled to Sinkhole Station seeking Luke and Ben Skywalker. The confrontation went badly for the Tribe. Its attackers were killed except for Vestara, who escaped and later reached Dathomir. The defeat did not erase the Tribe's wider fleet or its belief that conquest remained possible.

Why Vestara became important beyond one mission

Vestara's survival created an ongoing personal link between the Tribe and the Skywalkers. Their later alliances against Abeloth were fragile because the two groups disagreed profoundly about acceptable use of the Force and their claims to authority. The same individual could serve as a student, adversary, reluctant companion and source of information at different moments.

Anthropological assessment

This incident shows the hazards of hierarchy when subordinates have better local knowledge than commanders. The Sith's ambition carried a small force into a setting whose dangers it did not understand. Their political expectation of dominance prevented them from taking warnings seriously until the mission was nearly destroyed.
