Dathomir's red forests, stone formations, ruins, and dangerous wildlife create a landscape closely tied to local ritual and memory. Settlement is comparatively sparse, and sacred or ancestral places carry as much importance as formal cities.

The Nightsisters formed a matriarchal coven led by powerful figures such as Mother Talzin, while the Nightbrothers lived separately and under different social expectations. Politics and power
Dathomir was largely outside ordinary Republic political control. The Nightsisters dealt selectively with Jedi, Sith, bounty hunters, and other outsiders while protecting their autonomy. Their conflict with Count Dooku and General Grievous turned that relative isolation into catastrophe.

Historical significance
During the Clone Wars, Dathomir became entangled in Sith politics through Asajj Ventress, Savage Opress, and Maul. Dooku eventually ordered a devastating attack on the Nightsisters. Survivors, ruins, and inherited traditions continued to shape the world long after the massacre.
