Poe treats BB-8 as a trusted companion and operational partner. Their relationship resembles the pilot-astromech partnerships seen earlier in the saga while giving the sequel era its own distinctive droid personality.

Information carried by a trusted body
BB-8 becomes politically important because Poe Dameron entrusts the droid with information that the First Order wants. The map fragment is data, but its survival depends on a mobile social actor capable of hiding, choosing allies, and continuing a mission after separation from its owner.
That makes the droid more than a storage device. BB-8 evaluates situations, forms relationships, and participates in keeping information outside authoritarian control.
Astromech labor beneath heroic action
BB-8 also represents the practical labor that keeps pilots and ships functioning. Navigation, repair, interface work, and rapid problem-solving are ordinary astromech tasks, but the sequel era repeatedly turns those technical skills into conditions for survival.
