Jekk’Jekk Tarr is one of Star Wars gaming’s most conceptually interesting cantinas because its architecture assumes that different species need different environments. The establishment contains chambers with distinct atmospheric conditions, some of them dangerous to humans.
A cantina organized by atmosphere
Instead of one shared air supply serving every patron, the Jekk’Jekk Tarr separates environments to accommodate species with different respiratory needs. Moving through the establishment therefore means moving through bodily difference.
This is a rare case where alien biology changes architecture rather than being treated only as makeup or costume.
Humans as the outsider body
Some sections of the establishment are toxic to humans. The player must account for that vulnerability rather than assuming that human physiology defines the neutral standard for public space.
The reversal is useful because it makes environmental privilege visible. A room that is comfortable for one species can be inaccessible or lethal to another.
The Exchange behind the social space
The cantina is entangled with Visquis and the Exchange, making it more than an experiment in species-inclusive design. Criminal power uses the same segmented architecture for secrecy, control, and threat.
Public nightlife and organized crime again occupy the same building, but the atmospheric structure adds another layer of control over who can safely go where.
Nar Shaddaa and mixed populations
Nar Shaddaa draws refugees, smugglers, criminals, workers, and species from across the galaxy. A venue like the Jekk’Jekk Tarr makes sense in a city where no single population can be assumed to define every social space.
The establishment therefore turns the moon’s diversity into architecture rather than merely crowd composition.
Why Jekk’Jekk Tarr matters
Among Star Wars cantinas, it offers one of the best opportunities to discuss bodies, environment, species, and belonging together. It asks a basic question that most fictional bars ignore: what does a public venue do when its customers cannot all breathe the same air?
That makes it an unusually strong fit for the anthropological side of IDS.
