Maintenance supports communications, navigation, docking, medical facilities, power, and the ordinary services needed to sustain a major frontier station. Reliability is part of its political promise.
Ownership, authority, and status
The station is public infrastructure. Its value comes from representing a Republic that claims to connect distant communities rather than merely dominate them.
Doctrine or livelihood
Its doctrine is civic and logistical: make the frontier more reachable, coordinate response, and give the Republic a visible point of service and authority.

Upgrades and technical systems matter because the station must serve multiple functions at once. Flexibility is built into its role as a hub.
Mobility and historical meaning
Starlight makes mobility safer by producing routes, information, and institutional presence. Its destruction is devastating precisely because connection itself has become a symbol people depend on.
Why it matters
A vehicle is more than hardware
Starlight Beacon becomes historically useful when its technical design is read together with the people and institutions around it. Crew training determines what the machine can do. Maintenance determines whether it remains available. Ownership determines who gets access. Doctrine gives the vehicle a role inside a larger political or economic system. Modification records local knowledge and changing needs. Mobility then connects all of those elements by deciding which people, goods, weapons, and ideas can move through space.
