Project Necromancer

Project Necromancer links Imperial cloning research to Palpatine's effort to solve a political problem through biology: how can authoritarian power survive the death of the ruler?

A secret Imperial priority

Project Necromancer is identified in The Bad Batch as a top-secret Imperial effort of personal importance to Emperor Palpatine. The work takes place within Mount Tantiss under Dr. Royce Hemlock and the Advanced Science Division. Its secrecy is not incidental. The project depends on concentrating specialized knowledge while preventing ordinary Imperial institutions from seeing the whole objective.

M-count and biological compatibility

Experiments focus on the transfer or preservation of high M-count characteristics associated with Force sensitivity. The project therefore combines cloning with a problem the Kaminoan military program was not designed to solve. Producing genetic copies is not enough. The Empire wants biology that can sustain a specific form of power.

Children as research subjects

Force-sensitive children are imprisoned and treated as specimens. Their treatment reveals the political ethics of the program. Scientific value overrides consent, family, and ordinary personhood. The laboratory can classify a child by measurable usefulness and reorganize their life around the needs of the state.

Kaminoan expertise under coercion

Nala Se and other cloning specialists become valuable because expertise survives the destruction of institutions. The Empire does not need Kaminoan political autonomy in order to need Kaminoan knowledge. This is a recurring authoritarian pattern: destroy the community, preserve the useful expert, and move the knowledge into a more controllable facility.

Continuity of the Emperor

Later Star Wars stories show Palpatine pursuing biological and Sith means of survival. Project Necromancer belongs inside that larger continuity of experimentation, but IDS avoids claiming more than canon establishes directly. The importance of the project is that Imperial science is being organized around the ruler's personal continuity rather than the welfare of the state.

Anthropological reading

Project Necromancer is a form of dynastic politics disguised as technical research. The state attempts to solve succession through the body. Instead of accepting mortality and institutional transfer, the regime invests in making one person's rule biologically repeatable. That goal exposes the extreme concentration of authority at the center of the Empire.
