An ancient Jedi survives into another age

Celeste Morne was a Jedi Covenant Shadow from the Old Republic era who had accepted an extraordinary burden: containing the spirit of the ancient Sith Lord Karness Muur within the Muur Talisman. She had spent long periods isolated from the galaxy in an effort to prevent the Sith influence and rakghoul plague from spreading. Her survival meant that a crisis originating thousands of years earlier could return to a galaxy with different governments and technologies.

The Fel Empire's patrol finds an unexpected prisoner

In 127 ABY, the Fel Empire's Pellaeon-class Star Destroyer Iron Sun operated in the Deep Core. The vessel took Morne and her shuttle aboard. Morne believed the ship represented the same Imperial power she associated with Darth Vader and Palpatine, and chose to defend herself using the weapon she carried. The crew did not know that a routine detention had exposed the entire ship to a Sith artifact with catastrophic biological consequences.

The Muur Talisman transforms the crew

Morne used the Talisman's abilities to infect the crew, transforming its members into rakghouls subject to her direction. The Iron Sun ceased to function as an ordinary Imperial naval vessel and became an isolated mobile prison and plague reservoir. Morne took it into the Deep Core, believing she could keep Muur from reaching the inhabited galaxy by remaining far from major travel routes.

A later encounter clarifies the chronology

About ten years later, in 137 ABY, Cade Skywalker and others boarded the Iron Sun and encountered the infected crew. Cade's Force healing abilities impressed Morne and brought her into an attempt against Darth Krayt. These events are not part of 127 ABY, even though the published Vector crossover depicts the vessel and its occupants. The original takeover must be distinguished from the later discovery.

Anthropological assessment

The Iron Sun is a case of quarantine through isolation taken to an extreme. Morne's intention was to protect the wider population from an artifact she could not destroy, yet that choice involved forcibly transforming an entire crew. The story complicates the division between guardian and perpetrator: a person may seek collective safety while causing grave harm to those immediately within reach.
