Resistance grows after occupation

Cham Syndulla led the Free Ryloth Movement against an Imperial administration that extracted resources, controlled political appointments and constrained Twi'lek independence. By 14 BBY his fighters had established secret stores, contacts and the ability to conduct disruptive raids.

A dangerous opportunity

When intelligence revealed that Palpatine and Darth Vader were traveling near Ryloth, Cham's cell attempted to destroy the Imperial vessel and kill both Sith leaders. Allies and informants within the Imperial hierarchy made the plan possible, although those partners had motives of their own.

The ambush fails to remove the Sith

The Emperor and Vader survived and fought through threats on and around Ryloth. Cham's forces suffered losses, and the planet remained under Imperial control. The operation demonstrated willingness to strike high-ranking leaders but did not end the occupation.

Anthropological assessment

The attack exposes the divide between local liberation and broader regime change. Cham's primary commitment was to Ryloth, even when the operation placed him at the center of galactic politics. Rebel organizations often begin with specific grievances rather than a common ideological program.

Cham Syndulla confronts Vader and Palpatine: verified narrative

What happened and what remains separate

In Paul S. Kemp's Lords of the Sith, Cham Syndulla's Free Ryloth Movement targets a ship carrying Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader. The struggle leads to danger on Ryloth itself as the Sith use enormous force to survive. Cham's objective is to weaken Imperial rule over his world; the operation differs from the Republic-era liberation of Ryloth and from Hera's later Ghost crew actions.

Power, identity and historical geography

The Free Ryloth Movement is a local political organization whose goals need not be identical to the priorities of future Rebel Alliance factions. Occupation reorganized resource extraction, local authority and trade. Using a later portrait of Hera to illustrate Cham's attempt risks replacing a specific resistance leader with his daughter.

Chronology and source limits

The event date is a placement in Canon chronology, sometimes approximate. Books, movies and games were released in other real-world years. Character portraits from later stories do not depict every earlier scene.
