The family's hidden life ends

Galen, Lyra and Jyn Erso had lived on remote Lah'mu after fleeing Krennic's project. In 13 BBY, Krennic's Imperial party found their farm and demanded that Galen return to weapons research linked to kyber crystals.

A death and a forced return

Lyra confronted Krennic and was killed. Galen surrendered and was taken back into the Imperial research system. The Empire thus acquired a scientist through coercion, not through informed agreement to the work.

Jyn escapes the farm

Jyn hid in a prepared shelter and was later found by Saw Gerrera, who helped her survive. Her childhood became defined by separation from both parents and the experience of living with a militant resistance organizer.

Anthropological assessment

Lah'mu illustrates the power of a state to redirect technical expertise toward violence by threatening family members. It also shows how displaced children may enter new forms of care and loyalty through armed political networks.

Did Galen voluntarily leave a peaceful farm to seek Imperial promotion?

No. Krennic compelled him to return after the violent confrontation on Lah'mu.

The Empire finds Galen Erso: verified narrative

What happened and what remains separate

Orson Krennic's Imperial team found the Erso family on isolated Lah'mu after years in hiding. Lyra was killed during the confrontation and Galen was forced back into the Empire's secret weapons research. Young Jyn escaped into a prepared hiding place and was later collected by Saw Gerrera, whose network offered protection outside Imperial authority.

Power, identity and historical geography

The episode is about the destruction of a refuge as well as the recruitment of a scientist through coercion. Galen's specialist labor was valuable to the regime, and his family's vulnerability gave Krennic leverage. Jyn's survival depended on preparation, local concealment and Saw's willingness to care for a child, not on her later rank in the Rebellion.
