A confrontation with Vader
After helping the refugees escape, Obi-Wan separated himself from their transport to divert Darth Vader. He confronted his former student on a rocky moon, and their duel damaged Vader's helmet, briefly exposing Anakin's face.
A changed sense of responsibility
Vader claimed ownership of his transformation into a Sith, telling Obi-Wan that the death of his earlier identity was not solely the older Jedi's work. Obi-Wan defeated him but left him alive, deciding not to continue the fight.
Reva reaches the Lars family
Reva, having learned that a child on Tatooine mattered to Obi-Wan, pursued Luke. She ultimately chose not to kill him, rejecting the logic of retaliation that had driven her pursuit of Vader.
Anthropological assessment
The resolution contrasts revenge with guardianship. Obi-Wan and Reva face different choices about whether past harm should determine their next act, and both move away from reproducing the violence of the purge.

Obi-Wan defeats Vader and leaves him alive: the source account
Original narrative and chronology
Obi-Wan Kenobi drew Darth Vader away from a departing transport carrying people rescued through the Hidden Path. On a rocky world the two fought; Obi-Wan cracked Vader's mask and briefly heard Anakin's voice. Obi-Wan defeated but did not kill Vader and later returned to Tatooine, where he helped safeguard Luke. The scene occurs long after the 19 BBY Mustafar duel.
Anthropological interpretation
The duel tests Obi-Wan's sense of responsibility under a regime he could not yet overthrow. Protecting a group of refugees required creating distance between them and an Imperial pursuer. Recognition of a former student complicated his decision without altering the reality that Vader remained a danger to others.
