A resistance fighter years after Bracca
Five years after his earlier campaign, Cal Kestis had continued fighting the Empire with Saw Gerrera's network. An operation on Coruscant ended badly, leaving Cal searching for an effective means of protecting surviving Jedi and civilians.
The route to Tanalorr
Cal discovered leads to Tanalorr, a remote world hidden beyond the Koboh Abyss. His investigation connected him to High Republic-era explorer Dagan Gera, who had become consumed by a claim to the world. The journey moved between Jedi archaeology and an urgent modern struggle.
Bode Akuna's betrayal
Cal's companion Bode was secretly working for Imperial intelligence to protect his daughter Kata. The betrayal destroyed the trust of the Mantis crew and helped Imperial forces find an important refuge on Jedha, causing devastating losses.
Anthropological assessment
Tanalorr raises questions about ownership and refuge. A site can be valued simultaneously as ancestral territory, a personal sanctuary and a community's potential hiding place. Cal's decisions demonstrate why protecting vulnerable people may require resisting both state surveillance and individual possessiveness.

Was Dagan Gera a contemporary Jedi youngling trained with Cal?
No. Dagan was from the much earlier High Republic era and survived into the Imperial period by being preserved.

Cal Kestis seeks a refuge on Tanalorr: the source account
Original narrative and chronology
In Jedi: Survivor, Cal worked with early anti-Imperial networks after years of fighting the Empire. A mission on Coruscant ended with serious losses, after which he investigated a hidden route through the Koboh Abyss to Tanalorr. The story brought him into conflict with former High Republic Jedi Dagan Gera and with Bode Akuna, whose personal attachment and hidden Imperial affiliation endangered Cal's companions.
Anthropological interpretation
The struggle over Tanalorr concerns competing ideas of refuge. Cal imagined a place where those hunted by the Empire could remain beyond its reach, while Bode prioritized the safety of his daughter, Kata, even at others' expense. No location is automatically a sanctuary; protection depends on access, trust, supplies and collective choices.
