In 11,987 BBY, the Pius Dea religious movement seized effective control of the Galactic Republic. The sect arranged the impeachment of Supreme Chancellor Pers'lya, a Bothan, and his assassination soon afterward. Contispex, a Human senator and prominent member of the Coruscant Merchants' Guild, was elected Supreme Chancellor and later became known as Contispex I. His election ended the Kymoodon Era and began the Pius Dea Era.
A conspiracy becomes a government
Pius Dea had emerged on Coruscant centuries earlier around ideals of purity, opposition to corruption, and devotion to a deity called the Goddess.
Contispex gained a public reputation for condemning vice and corruption. Behind that reputation, the sect's leadership cooperated with the Malkite Poisoners to remove Pers'lya and secure control of the chancellorship.
Once in office, Contispex placed adherents in important economic, military, and political positions. Within generations, many posts were reserved for the sect and some became hereditary.
Non-Humans and religious opponents increasingly faced exclusion, while conversion could provide access to careers, travel, and state privilege.
The fall of Pers'lya
Pers'lya was the Bothan Supreme Chancellor displaced by the conspiracy. His removal gave the takeover a constitutional appearance because impeachment preceded the transfer of office.
His later assassination exposed the coercive structure behind that formal process. The surviving account does not preserve a public trial record or detailed charges sufficient to reconstruct the impeachment independently.
Contispex I and the new state
Contispex used the chancellorship to align government with Pius Dea doctrine. The sect gained control of the Republic's political and economic machinery and began purging opponents from positions of authority.
Over time, bureaucratic office became tied to religious loyalty. Public administration increasingly functioned as an expression of the faith.
The beginning of the Pius Dea Era
The new era lasted until 10,966 BBY. During that millennium the Republic fought at least thirty-four crusades, conducted inquisitions, and imposed humanocentric religious policy across large parts of its territory.
The Jedi eventually severed ties with the Republic, Alsakan and alien powers resisted the regime, and internal dissent later produced the Renunciates.

Anthropological assessment
The Pius Dea takeover shows how religious ideology can capture political institutions without abolishing their formal structure. The Senate, chancellorship, bureaucracy, navy, and economy remained recognizable, but control of appointments changed who could use them and for what purposes.
It also shows why authoritarian change does not require an immediate replacement of every institution. Existing offices can be redirected through patronage, purges, hereditary appointments, and the exclusion of people defined as politically or religiously suspect.
