A long absence after Lothal

Ezra Bridger had arranged for purrgil to carry Thrawn and the Chimaera away during the liberation of Lothal in 1 BBY. Years later, Imperial loyalist Morgan Elsbeth and her allies pursued a route to the distant world of Peridea, where Thrawn's forces remained stranded.

A costly journey through another galaxy

Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren pursued the same destination, hoping to find Ezra and prevent Thrawn from rebuilding Imperial power. Their mission involved an ancient hyperspace route, Nightsister magic and competing assumptions about loyalty.

An Imperial commander makes his return

Thrawn departed Peridea using the Eye of Sion and his Star Destroyer, while Ezra escaped with assistance from his friends. Ahsoka and Sabine remained behind, and the threat of Thrawn's return was not resolved by a complete military defeat.

Anthropological assessment

The story concerns continuity between an apparently fallen state and the networks that hope to restore it. Thrawn's reputation becomes a political resource for loyalists who imagine a future beyond the New Republic's settlement.

Was Thrawn killed at the Battle of Lothal?

No. He disappeared with Ezra and later survived on Peridea.

Explore three perspectives:

Ezra Bridger had arranged for purrgil to carry Thrawn and the Chimaera away during the liberation of Lothal in 1 BBY. Years later, Imperial loyalist Morgan Elsbeth and her allies pursued a route to the distant world of Peridea, where Thrawn's forces remained stranded.

An exiled admiral exploits the Great Mothers' help

The purrgil carried Thrawn and Ezra away from Lothal years earlier. On Peridea, Morgan Elsbeth's Eye of Sion provides a route home, and the Great Mothers cooperate with Thrawn. The Chimaera returns toward Dathomir despite Ahsoka and Sabine's attempts to stop it; Ezra separately reaches familiar space.

His return is a potential Imperial threat, not proof that he immediately commands the entire galaxy or a restored Empire. It also depends on alliances across cultures: the Great Mothers have their own interests, and the Noti of Peridea live differently from Thrawn's militarized entourage. The series therefore distinguishes geography, political allegiance and species identity.

Thrawn's return from Peridea

Thrawn's return required more than a military decision by a commanding officer. He had been isolated with the Chimaera and surviving personnel on Peridea after the purrgil took him away from Lothal. Morgan Elsbeth arranged a hyperspace ring capable of reaching the distant galaxy, and the Great Mothers provided crucial assistance. Those alliances show how a technologically sophisticated Imperial force could still depend on cultural and political knowledge it did not fully control.

Ahsoka and Sabine's effort to intervene limited some of Thrawn's options but did not stop his departure. The official Thrawn Databank identifies Dathomir as the return destination with the Great Mothers, while Ahsoka and Sabine remained stranded on Peridea. The sequence should not be inverted to suggest that all the characters returned together. The new artwork tracks exile, coalition and arrival, without drawing an invented intergalactic course.

Check your interpretation: Did Ahsoka and Sabine return on Thrawn's ship when he reached Dathomir?

Explanation: No. They remained on Peridea while Thrawn returned with the Great Mothers and his personnel.

An exile ends, but not for everyone

Ahsoka connects the aftermath of Ezra Bridger and the purrgil carrying Thrawn away from Lothal to a later journey across galaxies. Morgan Elsbeth and the Great Mothers arrange the means for Thrawn to escape Peridea, where his forces have been stranded. Their methods and goals are not identical to an ordinary New Republic military expedition. Thrawn's Star Destroyer is a physical means of return; the rituals and Night Trooper forces associated with the Great Mothers create a distinct social and religious alliance. The episode does not explain every part of the distant galaxy's history.

The finale is not a simple exchange in which every exile returns home. Ezra Bridger gets aboard Thrawn's escaping vessel and ultimately rejoins Hera Syndulla, while Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren remain on Peridea. Morgan Elsbeth's confrontation and sacrifice also belong to the cost of Thrawn's departure. Lucasfilm's episode analysis confirms that the admiral and the Great Mothers reach Dathomir. It would be inaccurate to place Ezra in permanent captivity with Thrawn after this episode or to describe Ahsoka's own return to the known galaxy as part of the same finale.

IDS distinguishes an individual's homecoming from the strategic meaning of a commander's return. The New Republic now faces a potential renewed Imperial coalition, but the future scale of Thrawn's operations is not established by this single scene. The Calodan dossier explains the earlier search for information about Thrawn, while Mandalore's liberation supplies related background on the era's scattered Imperial holdouts.
