Failed diplomacy

Supreme Chancellor Valorum dispatched Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi to negotiate. Instead, the Federation attempted to kill the Jedi and began a ground invasion with battle droids. The ambassadors escaped and helped Amidala leave Theed.

Occupation and resistance

The Federation seized the Queen and sought compliance from her government. She escaped to ask the Senate for help and ultimately returned to organize a military and political response. The invasion exposed the weakness of Republic institutions when a commercial organization wielded organized force.

Anthropological assessment

The event illustrates a corporation operating as a coercive state actor. Economic control, armed technology, and hidden political relationships undermined the distinction between a trade disagreement and an assault on sovereignty.

The Federation's invasion: evidence and political anthropology

Documented chronology and participants

The Trade Federation deployed a blockade against Naboo while claiming the dispute involved trade regulation. Its forces then invaded the planet and removed Queen Amidala's ability to govern freely. Nute Gunray publicly represented the corporation; the Sith Lord Darth Sidious covertly pushed the operation toward a political crisis that would benefit Palpatine in the Senate.

Institutions, identities and material life

Corporate ownership of ships and droid armies translated economic power into coercive occupation. The events show why trade disputes become matters of sovereignty when a private organization imposes armed control over ports, roads and civic offices. The Naboo and Gungan populations experienced the same invasion through different institutions.
