The Altiri and Anarrians make first contact

After developing separately on opposite continents for roughly fifteen centuries, the Altiri and Anarrians meet at sea and quickly enter a global conflict driven by xenophobia and competition for resource-rich islands.

Around 4500 BBY, the Altiri and Anarrians finally encountered one another on the Unknown Regions world they called Altiria and Anarris. Both species had developed modern civilizations around 6000 BBY on separate continents without knowing the other existed. Their first maritime meeting became violent, and competition over resource-rich islands helped produce a long planetary war.

Fifteen centuries of separate development

Oceanic geography kept the two species apart despite sharing one planet.

Each developed its own government, language, and territorial assumptions.

First contact through fear

The first meeting occurred at sea rather than through a formal diplomatic mission.

Mutual xenophobia and uncertainty turned encounter into conflict.

Islands become contested territory

Small islands contained ores, fuel sources, and fertile land.

Competition over those resources gave material stakes to cultural fear.

Anthropological assessment

Altiria/Anarris is a rare case of first contact between intelligent species on the same planet.

The conflict shows that geographic isolation can make neighboring peoples as unfamiliar to one another as civilizations separated by interstellar space.

First contact occurs between peoples on the same planet

The Altiri and Anarrians lived on separate landmasses of one Unknown Regions world and developed complex societies without knowing of one another for many generations. Around 4500 BBY, maritime travel brought them into contact. Their meeting occurred in an environment where neither group had a preexisting shared diplomatic tradition or clear agreement about the resources separating their continents. The encounter became violent and helped establish a dispute over small islands containing valuable land and materials. This was an indigenous planetary conflict, not the result of a Republic mission introducing both groups to galactic politics.

The two civilizations had been developing since much earlier, roughly 6000 BBY in the surviving chronology. The distinction is essential: the existence of one society did not depend on the moment outsiders from the other continent first encountered it. Maritime technology could bring political worlds into contact while leaving their values, languages and interpretations of territory very different. A narrative of sudden 'discovery' by one group would reproduce its viewpoint as if the other had no history before the voyage.

An ocean is a political boundary until it can be crossed

Separated continents allow social systems to develop without regular exchange, even on one planet. Changes in travel capacity can bring people into competition before they develop common institutions for negotiation. The ocean's role is therefore both environmental and historical.

Fear is not the entire explanation

The sources associate early hostility with xenophobia, but economic stakes in the contested islands matter too. A conflict can combine unfamiliarity with concrete incentives over fertile land, fuel and ore. Treating it as irrational hatred alone would erase material interests.

Were Altiri and Anarrians created as societies when their explorers first met?

No. Their civilizations existed earlier. Circa 4500 BBY refers to interspecies contact and the conflict that followed.

Contact without a shared political institution

Two Legends chronologies place different interspecies developments around 4500 BBY. Comparing them reveals why the presence of multiple intelligent species on one planet does not by itself determine whether their relationship will be organized through a common state or a prolonged conflict.

This world's record

The Altiri and Anarrians encountered each other after long geographic separation. The account emphasizes a violent first meeting and disputes over islands; it does not establish a successful common government at this point.

Contrasting world

On Dac, Mon Calamari and Quarren were brought into one monarchy under King Morn. This is a story of political integration, not a first encounter between previously unknown civilizations.

Evidence check: does a shared approximate date establish a connection between the worlds?

No. The sources place these developments in roughly the same period, but do not identify a shared campaign, diplomatic mission, or direct cause connecting them.

The contrast is IDS anthropological interpretation. The source chronologies do not establish a direct relationship between these two planetary histories.

Altiri and Anarrians meet across the sea

  1. Separate civilizations on one planet

The Altiri and Anarrians evolved and established settlements on different continents of the same temperate planet. Legends places both societies' modern development as far back as around 6000 BBY. Their lack of earlier contact is not the same as isolation between star systems: the continental ocean prevented ordinary encounters even while both societies developed local institutions and resource networks.

  2. An encounter at sea leads to violence

Around 4500 BBY, the first encounter at sea became violent amid mutual fear. The world's small resource-rich islands were especially important because their minerals, fuel supplies and fertile land could be claimed by either population. The historical summary describes an extended conflict after the first meeting, yet it provides no authentic first-person account of the precise exchange or the words of the people aboard the vessels.

  3. Two names preserve competing positions

The planet is called Altiria by one population and Anarris by the other. Using both names shows that there was no shared authority able to impose a universal place-name at the moment of contact. The war shifted from large-scale fighting to skirmishes in later periods, and some sources give a very long duration. These reported periods should be read as a broad historical arc, not a verified account of continuous planet-wide combat on every date.

Did this first contact occur between two different planets?

No. The two societies lived on different continents of the same world and encountered one another at sea. Its dual name is part of their distinct political and cultural perspectives.

A planetary species' later conflict must not be treated as proof that all individuals supported xenophobia or war. Exact sourcebook pages and publication image rights remain under review.

First contact on an already inhabited world

Altiria/Anarris provides an unusual example of first contact within one planet rather than between star systems. The Altiri and Anarrians developed complex societies on separated continents, and the surviving Legends narrative places their meeting centuries after the rise of those civilizations. The description of a first encounter is consequently a claim about the limits of what either population knew, not about the absence of other intelligent inhabitants.

Later conflict over resource-rich islands illustrates how geography can turn newly recognized neighbors into rivals. It would be misleading to represent that early contact with the later borderlines or national symbols of a fully developed war. The original source does not give the names of the first sailors, an exact meeting date, or a documented map of the islands contested in that initial encounter.

Check the historical interpretation: Was this first contact an offworld expedition arriving on an uninhabited planet?

Explanation: No. Two societies already inhabiting different continents of the same planet encountered one another.
