The protective shield disappears
The destruction of Endor's shield generator opened an opportunity for Rebel starfighter pilots. Lando and Wedge led a group into the station's internal structure to strike the central reactor while the wider Rebel fleet occupied Imperial defenses.
A decisive chain reaction
Shots against key reactor components triggered explosions that spread through the battle station. The Millennium Falcon and the surviving fighters escaped before the second Death Star was destroyed. The Emperor had already died at Vader's hands, and his flagship project was lost.
Celebrations spread beyond Endor
The Alliance celebrated across many systems as news of Palpatine's defeat circulated. The event broke the aura of inevitable Imperial victory, though parts of the regime continued fighting and retained large fleets.
Anthropological analysis
Endor became a symbol of liberation because the collapse of military and personal authoritarian power occurred in one battle. Yet symbols of victory do not immediately create legal peace, an issue that would dominate the following year.

Did all Imperial commanders surrender at the instant the station exploded?
No. The Galactic Civil War continued after Endor.

Multiple teams contribute to the destruction
Destroying the ground-based shield generator opens the Death Star II to attack. Lando Calrissian, flying the Millennium Falcon with Nien Nunb, and Wedge Antilles lead the interior flight toward the main reactor. Wedge fires into the reactor infrastructure and Lando contributes the final destructive attack as the pilots race to escape the explosion.
The military victory depends on activities that are geographically separate but operationally connected: Ewok and commando action on the surface, the fleet holding its position, and a small strike force penetrating the station. Crediting only one individual erases coordinated labor. The station's destruction is a decisive event at Endor but does not by itself establish a galaxy-wide treaty or complete demobilization.
