One branch of the 3963 Onslaught began almost literally overhead. The Mandalorians had used Onderon's moon Dxun as a stronghold for decades. From that base, Mandalore the Ultimate sent Neo-Crusaders on Basilisk war droids through the unusually close atmospheres of moon and planet toward Iziz. General Vaklu and Onderonian forces resisted, but the city's defenses collapsed within hours.

ONDERON UNDER ATTACK
Event sequence and source limits
During the 3963 invasion, Mandalore the Ultimate sent Neo-Crusader forces against Onderon from Dxun, where Mandalorians had rebuilt their strength. Basilisk war droids helped launch the assault across the unusually close moon-planet environment. General Vaklu and Onderonian defenders resisted but Iziz was captured. This first Mandalorian Battle of Onderon is distinct from the older Beast Wars around 4000 BBY and later political fighting near 3951 BBY. It also belongs to the broad 3963 Onslaught, rather than the earlier period of independent Outer Rim conquests.
People, technology and institutions
Dxun’s proximity to Onderon made the moon part of the planet’s immediate strategic environment. Mandalorian command could exploit geography that defenders could not easily change. The destruction of city defenses produced effects on civilian political authority. Describing military defeat as proof of personal cowardice would erase differences in training, technologies and access to reinforcement. The record supports the route and outcome, not a minute-by-minute map of every Basilisk.

A former refuge becomes invasion infrastructure
Dxun had sheltered Mandalorian power after earlier defeats. Over decades it became a place from which the clans could rebuild, store matériel, and prepare for renewed expansion.
Historical geography therefore mattered. A site created by one war became the launch platform for another generation's invasion.
Basilisk war droids turn vertical geography into an attack route
Onderon and Dxun's atmospheres periodically intersect closely enough to create unusual movement possibilities. Basilisk-mounted warriors exploited that relationship.
Technology transformed a celestial-geographic peculiarity into military access.
Bravery does not compensate for institutional mismatch
Later Mandalorian accounts acknowledged Onderonian courage while dismissing their organization. The defenders faced a force whose doctrine, equipment, and mobility had been refined through years of conquest.
The battle is therefore less about personal weakness than about different military systems meeting under unequal conditions.

Why was Dxun already Mandalorian?
Mandalorian forces had used the moon across earlier conflicts, including the era of Mandalore the Indomitable. Mandalore the Ultimate rebuilt clan power there before the later wars.
Did Onderon join the Mandalorians willingly?
No. The 3963 battle was a conquest. Individual later collaborations and Mandalorian cultural influence should not be projected backward as consent to the invasion.
Anthropological assessment
Onderon shows how military landscapes persist across generations. Fortified or culturally significant sites can outlive particular armies and remain available to later political movements.
The battle also cautions against explanations that reduce defeat to cultural stereotypes. Organization, technology, strategic position, and preparation matter more than claims about a people's supposed character.
Onderon's skies become an invasion corridor
The Mandalorians used their long-standing position on Dxun to mount an attack against Onderon. The close orbital relationship between moon and planet enabled an assault with Basilisk war droids, turning an unusual piece of planetary geography into a tactical advantage. Onderon's military, including forces associated with General Vaklu, confronted attackers whose equipment and experience had been honed across other conquests. Iziz fell and the world passed under Mandalorian control.
Why the launch point matters
An occupying force does not have to come from a distant fleet if it already holds a nearby moon with a long record of military use. Dxun had accumulated Mandalorian material, experience and defensive capacity through earlier conflicts. The Onderon attack demonstrates how the outcome of one war can determine the starting position of another: a refuge or military camp can become the infrastructure of invasion.
Not the only Battle of Onderon
The Beast Wars, the Great Sith War, the Mandalorian Wars and later Onderonian political conflicts all produced battles linked to Iziz. The local name is not enough to identify the combatants. This 3963 BBY episode belongs to the Mandalorian Wars and should not be illustrated with generic imagery of the much later Onderonian civil war without an explicit label.
Why could attackers exploit Dxun so effectively?
Because of the moon's close relationship with Onderon and the Mandalorian capacity to launch Basilisk-borne troops from their existing base. Both geography and technology mattered.

How to interpret the Onderon engagement
Recorded outcome: Mandalorian conquest. The event belongs to the connection between Dxun and Onderon. A single battle cannot describe every front of the war.
Historical method: Campaign maps and later summaries can establish an event without preserving individual commanders, tactical formations, civilian testimony or precise hourly timing. Detailed scene reconstruction without those sources would mislead readers.
Test the evidence: what can this entry establish?
It supports the documented event and stated outcome, but not casualty totals, spoken orders or motives of unnamed participants. Compare the references and related events before inferring broader causes.

Onderon's first defeat: the Dxun route and the later war
A staging area already near the target
Mandalore the Ultimate's Mandalorians had established Dxun as an important headquarters before the full 3963 BBY invasion. Onderon therefore faced an enemy able to strike from its very close moon, rather than from an unknown force assembling far beyond the system. Legends descriptions of the attack emphasize Basilisk war droids and an approach to Iziz's city defenses that exploited this unusual geography. The surviving reference material does not supply an exact flight-time, fleet census or verified minute-by-minute record of the assault.
The occupation and the later counteroffensive are separate
This timeline event covers an early Mandalorian victory against Onderonian defenders. It must not be merged with the later Republic offensive against entrenched Mandalorian forces on Dxun. That later battle had a different goal: assaulting a fortified base as the Republic pushed the Neo-Crusaders back. The enormous cost attributed to the later campaign should not be projected into the earlier capture as though it took place during one afternoon's city defense.
City, moon and political responsibility
The walled city of Iziz was both an inhabited center and a concentration of government. Once attacked from a nearby military base, its physical defenses and ability to coordinate support were tested simultaneously. An analysis of this outcome can address material infrastructure and unequal access to military resources without claiming all Onderonians shared one political view. The strategic geography is established in Legends accounts, while civilian experiences, precise losses and unknown motives must remain research questions.
Test your historical judgment: Was the Republic's later costly battle on Dxun part of this same 3963 BBY assault?
Evidence-based explanation: No. The first Onderon conquest and the later fighting against the Mandalorian stronghold on Dxun have different operational purposes and belong to different stages of the war.
