As one branch of the Onslaught, Mandalore the Ultimate attacked Onderon directly from Dxun in 3963 BBY. The two bodies' atmospheres periodically touched, making the moon a natural staging base. Basilisk war droids descended toward Iziz, and the Onderonian military under General Vaklu was overwhelmed. The capital fell within hours.

Old geography, new military use

Dxun had been central to Mandalorian history since Mandalore the Indomitable died there in the Great Sith War.

Mandalore the Ultimate converted that historical refuge into a launch platform for planetary assault.

Basilisk war droids bypass the old defensive logic

Iziz was designed as a fortified city with long experience of terrestrial threats.

Mandalorian air assault from the moon exploited a dimension the old defenses were poorly prepared to absorb.

Onderon becomes a staging point

Control of Onderon and Dxun gave the invaders another platform for operations toward more central regions.

A local victory therefore altered a much larger campaign.

Interactive campaign notes

Why could Mandalorians launch directly from Dxun?

Onderon and Dxun periodically shared atmosphere, allowing unusual transfer conditions that had long connected the moon's ecology and warfare to the planet below.

Was General Vaklu already the later separatist leader?

He was already a military figure in this era. His later role during the Dark Wars belongs decades afterward and should not be projected backward as if his politics were unchanged.

Anthropological assessment

Onderon shows how geography becomes historical infrastructure. A moon's orbit, atmosphere, and older political associations can shape military possibilities thousands of years later.

It also demonstrates how defensive traditions can become obsolete when attackers change the technological scale or direction of assault.

How to interpret the Onderon engagement

Recorded outcome: Mandalorian capture of Iziz. The event belongs to the initial invasion from Dxun. A single battle cannot describe every front of the war.

Historical method: Campaign maps and later summaries can establish an event without preserving individual commanders, tactical formations, civilian testimony or precise hourly timing. Detailed scene reconstruction without those sources would mislead readers.

Test the evidence: what can this entry establish?

It supports the documented event and stated outcome, but not casualty totals, spoken orders or motives of unnamed participants. Compare the references and related events before inferring broader causes.

Onderon is the site of several separate wars

The first Mandalorian battle in 3963 BBY was an invasion of Iziz launched from the nearby Dxun stronghold. Mandalore the Ultimate's Neo-Crusaders used Basilisk war droids and swiftly overcame local defenses led by General Vaklu. This page serves as a comparative guide to the invasion. The later Mandalorian campaign around 3960 BBY concerns Republic operations against the occupying forces and strongholds in the Onderon–Dxun theater, after Revan had entered the war. The fact that both conflicts involve Mandalorian positions does not make them one battle. See the later military event →

The Onderon civil war in 3951 BBY takes place during the Dark Wars depicted in Knights of the Old Republic II. Vaklu's later role in a political struggle should not be retroactively attributed to his command of Onderon's defenses in 3963. Read the later civil war →

Research method: The 3963 date and the broader operational geography appear in Legends military chronologies. The game and later guides provide narrative perspective, but their story branches and retrospective dialogue do not supply an exhaustive, contemporary battle log. Original art here is an interpretive visual rather than proof of individual tactics.
