CIVIL WAR ON GRIZMALLT

Evidence, dates and historical boundaries

Around 3900 BBY, political violence engulfed the Core World of Grizmallt late in the reign of Queen Elsinoré den Tasia. Legends sources describe a civil war that displaced residents and contributed to one of her final colonization efforts. The royal expedition of Beneficent Tasia, Constant and Mother Vima carried Humans from the conflict, led by the scout Kwilaan. The evidence establishes war and displacement without supplying a complete account of the rival factions, casualty totals, or all cities affected. References also differ in how they associate the Grizmallti civil war and later events on Naboo.

Anthropological interpretation

Migration caused by civil conflict differs fundamentally from state-sponsored exploration for commercial or territorial advantage, even when the same ships and royal patrons are involved. Refugees may pursue safety while governments describe expansion as a prestigious achievement. The settlers' experience was shaped by loss of home, uncertainty about destination and the need to organize a new life on a world already inhabited by others. Grizmallt’s military conflict must be distinguished from later Human–Gungan disputes on Naboo and from the Time of Suffering that appears in Naboo history.

Migration changes meaning under civil war

Earlier royal expeditions were projects of exploration and expansion.

The final expedition carries people whose immediate motive is survival.

A Core World becomes a refugee-producing society

Political violence at the center of the Republic creates migration toward a distant Mid Rim world.

Core status does not guarantee political stability.

Anthropological assessment

The Grizmallti civil war shows how colonization and refuge can overlap.

Settlers may arrive with both expansionist institutions and genuine experiences of displacement, making simple colonizer-versus-refugee categories inadequate by themselves.

Primary context · Old Republic research

Civil war transforms a royal voyage into refugee migration

Around 3900 BBY, civil war broke out on the Core World Grizmallt during the final period of Queen Elsinoré den Tasia's reign. The queen had previously supported ambitious voyages that extended Grizmallti contact and colonization across numerous star systems. The new crisis changed the character of outward migration. A final expedition carried people leaving a violent political struggle rather than merely settlers seeking opportunity under royal patronage. That overlap between refuge and colonial expansion is essential to understanding the origin of Naboo's later Human society.

The three associated vessels are remembered as the Beneficent Tasia, Constant and Mother Vima, and the scout Kwilaan led the mission toward the southern galactic quadrant. The expedition lost contact with Grizmallt, leaving many at home to believe the travelers had disappeared. Their arrival on Nabu, followed by lasting settlements, demonstrates how a population can develop distinct institutions when regular ties to its place of origin break. This is not a story in which the Grizmallti first discovered an empty world: Legends records earlier royal visits, and indigenous Gungan societies were already established there.

Published accounts differ in framing. Some older Legends references describe adventure, colonization and lost expeditions, while later material states more plainly that civil war produced refugees. Those accounts need not be collapsed into one uniform personal motivation for every traveler. Some may have sought safety, others opportunities, and the expedition remained sponsored by a monarchy pursuing a colonization policy. Neither the experience of persecution at home nor the funding of exploration granted the newcomers authority over existing Gungan land.

The Core is not immune to displacement

Grizmallt was an established Core World rather than a neglected frontier planet. Civil war still displaced people and disrupted continuity across generations. Political centrality should never be mistaken for guaranteed everyday safety.

Refugee and colonist are not mutually exclusive categories

The expedition included refugees from war and also established settlements on an inhabited planet. These facts belong together. Treating the migrants only as victims erases indigenous sovereignty, while treating them only as invaders can erase the violence they were fleeing.

Did the Grizmallti civil war begin on Naboo?

No. The war occurred on the refugees' homeworld, Grizmallt. Later disputes between Human settlers and Gungans occurred on Naboo and form a separate history.
