01 · Orientation

Summary

Gungans are an amphibious species native to Naboo with their own cities, leadership, military institutions, technologies, and political traditions distinct from the human Naboo population.

02 · Biology

Bodies and adaptation

Gungans are amphibious humanoids adapted to life in and around Naboo's lakes and swamps. Their physiology supports underwater settlement but does not explain the political organization of Gungan society.

03 · Society

Community and cultural variation

Gungan communities maintain underwater cities such as Otoh Gunga, local leadership, military forces, religious and ceremonial practices, and technologies that draw on Naboo's natural environment.

04 · Institutions

Politics and power

For much of the late Republic, Gungans and the human Naboo maintained separate political systems. The Trade Federation invasion forced new cooperation and a formal alliance between the two populations.

05 · Change over time

Historical pressures

The Battle of Naboo turned Gungan military participation into a decisive part of planetary defense. Later, Jar Jar Binks's career in the Galactic Senate created another route through which Gungans entered interplanetary politics.
