In 3967 BBY, Jedi Knight Jelph Marrian was expelled from the Jedi Order after alienating the Council. He then joined the Jedi Covenant as a Shadow, one of the organization's covert operatives. His life had already been shaped by stories of the destruction caused by the Great Sith War, making the Covenant's promise to prevent a Sith return especially powerful.
A Toprawan shaped by Sith memory
Jelph's mother told him stories about the Great Sith War and the devastation associated with it.
Those inherited memories made the return of the Sith feel like a personal threat rather than an abstract historical possibility.
Expulsion does not end his Jedi identity
Leaving or being removed from the formal Order did not erase Jelph's training, moral commitments, or sense of mission.
The Covenant offered an alternative institution in which those skills remained valued.
Becoming a Shadow
Covenant Shadows operated covertly, gathering information and carrying out tasks outside ordinary public Jedi structures.
Jelph's later life would take him far beyond the Republic and eventually into contact with the Lost Tribe of Sith.

Was the Jedi Covenant part of the Jedi Order?
Its members were Jedi, but the Covenant was a secret splinter organization with its own leadership, resources, and agenda. That distinction becomes crucial when it acts against other Jedi.
Why would an expelled Jedi join it?
The Covenant offered continuity of purpose to someone who still feared the Sith but no longer had a place inside normal Council structures.

Anthropological assessment
Jelph's recruitment shows how splinter institutions attract people whose identities remain tied to a mission after formal membership ends.
A person can reject or lose trust in an institution while retaining deep commitment to the values that institution claimed to represent.
