Around 3970 BBY, Provisional Governor Myrial declared the Kanz sector independent from the Galactic Republic and renamed her territory the Argazdan Redoubt. The secession was accompanied by mass executions of Republic loyalists and exterminatory violence against the Ereesi. Because the Republic and Jedi were increasingly consumed by the Mandalorian Wars, Myrial's regime survived and expanded.

Myrial and separatist violence
What the historical record establishes
Myrial, leader of the Myrialites, declared independence from the Republic and proclaimed the Argazdan Redoubt in the Kanz sector around 3970 BBY. The break followed preparation and purge of pro-Republic officers; revolutionary violence targeted loyalists and the Ereesi homeworld. Legends reference accounts describe a 300-year period of repression and war, but certain preparatory purges are dated by sources earlier, and must not all be assigned to a single day in 3970.
People, institutions and consequences
The new political identity combined ideological claims, coercion and control over an army. Attacks against Ereesi and loyalists reveal that 'independence' did not necessarily mean liberation for the sector's different communities. The Republic's limited reaction was shaped by wider Mandalorian and later Sith wars. Those conflicts help explain nonintervention but do not morally or legally justify genocide, mass enslavement or political executions.

From protected frontier to separatist state
Argazda had originally sought Republic membership partly because it needed protection from slavers and raiders.
Over generations, Argazdan military capacity grew while resentment toward Republic culture hardened. The state created for protection became the base for secession.
The Myrialite revolution
Myrial cultivated loyalists, weakened opposition, and prepared the sector fleet before openly breaking with Coruscant.
Republic supporters were killed, and the new regime fused political loyalty with a fundamentalist form of Vianism.
The Republic's absence
The Mandalorian Wars mattered even where Mandalorians were not present. They consumed the attention and resources that might otherwise have been used to stop Myrial.
The result was a regime that survived three hundred years and killed billions before Republic and Jedi intervention finally ended it.
Explore the event
Why did the Republic not immediately stop the secession?
The Kanz sector was remote and the Republic was entering the Mandalorian crisis. Later wars kept diverting attention, allowing the Argazdan Redoubt to endure far longer than its local power alone might suggest.
Was this part of the Mandalorian Wars?
No. The Kanz Disorders were a separate conflict that began during the Mandalorian Wars. Their overlap matters because the larger war helped create the political space in which Myrial could act.
How long did the Kanz Disorders last?
Approximately three centuries, from about 3970 to 3670 BBY.

Anthropological assessment
The Kanz Disorders show how imperial peripheries can become autonomous when central institutions are overstretched. Distance, local military capacity, and ideological boundary-making all mattered.
They also show that a crisis in one region can indirectly cause mass violence elsewhere when it removes the external constraints that had limited local authoritarian actors.

The Kanz Disorders: independence for rulers, captivity for subjects
What the original chronology can establish
Around 3970 BBY, Provisional Governor Myrial broke the Kanz sector away from the Republic and founded the Argazdan Redoubt. Supporters of the Myrialite religious movement used purges and military force to establish control. Accounts describe killings of Republic loyalists and the destruction of life on Ereesus, followed by campaigns against other worlds. The Disorders continued for roughly three centuries and ended around 3670 BBY. The secession began during the larger Mandalorian Wars, when Republic forces were already occupied, but it was not itself a Mandalorian invasion.
Institutional, cultural and material consequences
The term independence can describe sovereignty for a ruling group without improving freedom for all residents. Myrial's project fused political secession with the coercion of ideological opponents and alien communities. Under the resulting regime, Lorrdians faced enslavement and were forbidden to speak freely with one another. Their adaptive use of nonverbal gestures later became an important part of Lorrdian cultural history. That connection should not romanticize enslavement or imply that forced silence was a benefit. The event is better understood as one of several routes through which wartime strain let coercive regional institutions become entrenched outside the Republic's effective reach.
Uncertainty and continuity check
The 3970 BBY date marks the declaration and opening of the conflict, not the beginning of every attack later associated with the Redoubt. A conflicting earlier date for some preparatory purges appears in certain references. A single exact day for all atrocities is not established.
Test your historical judgment: Was the creation of the Argazdan Redoubt necessarily liberation for the Lorrdians?
Correction and educational insight: No. The regime eventually enslaved Lorrdians and imposed severe restrictions on communication.
