- Destroy reinforcements before arrival
As Darth Malgus prepared a massive assault on Corellia's Meridian Complex, Republic planners began moving fleets toward the shipyard. One of those forces needed to refuel at Onderon. The Empire therefore tried to win the coming Corellian battle before the Republic ships ever arrived by manipulating Onderon's internal politics and targeting the planet's anti-orbital defense network.
Corellia creates a chain of vulnerable waypoints
The Republic could not simply send every ship straight to the Meridian Complex. Fleets needed fuel and staging points. Onderon was one of the few usable locations within range.
That meant Malgus could weaken Corellia's defense by attacking the route rather than the final objective.
Imperial infiltration turns local politics into strategy
Imperial agents sought influence over Onderon's defense systems and political instability. The plan centered on using the planet's own anti-orbital guns against Republic vessels.
This is a recurring pattern in long wars: existing political fractures become opportunities for outside powers.
The 11th Fleet becomes the real target
The immediate fighting happened on Onderon, but the strategic target was the fleet above it. Preventing those ships from reaching Corellia could alter the larger campaign without requiring the Empire to defeat them at the Meridian Complex.
The Commander and allies disrupted the plan, allowing Republic reinforcements to remain relevant to the coming battle.

Why attack Onderon if Corellia is the objective?
Because fleets depend on fuel and staging infrastructure. Destroying reinforcements in transit can be easier than fighting them after they join a defended position.
What made local politics militarily important?
The faction controlling planetary defense systems could threaten ships in orbit, turning a domestic power struggle into a fleet-level danger.
Was Iziz destroyed?
No. Fighting caused substantial casualties, but the capital avoided the kind of planetary devastation seen in earlier wars.
Anthropological assessment
The Onderon mission illustrates how war networks distant places. A battle on Corellia changes the value of fuel depots, governments, and defense cannons on another world because logistics connect them.
It also shows that sovereignty during wartime is partly about controlling infrastructure. A government may formally rule a planet while infiltrators compete for the systems that make that rule materially effective.

Onderon political crisis: evidence and material culture
What happened
On Onderon, the Onslaught conflict revolves around a conspiracy that threatens the planet's allegiance to the Republic. Understanding the episode requires more than naming Republic and Sith forces; it also requires attention to rulers, factions and citizens whose institutions will survive the visiting armies.
Anthropological interpretation
Onderon's jungles and dangerous wildlife influence how combatants move and gather intelligence. The environment is therefore part of political history. Republic and Imperial story paths can have different local outcomes, so the dossier must not present a single optional player decision as fixed.
Chronology, uncertainty and player choices
The BBY date is a Legends timeline placement and is not automatically established by a real-world game update release. Where the storyline branches, one optional player outcome is not asserted as universal. Recurring game events receive tentative placements.
