Around 3961 BBY, Revan accessed an ancient Rakatan Star Map deep in Kashyyyk's Shadowlands. The device preserved a fragment of navigational information connected to the long-dead Infinite Empire and the Star Forge. Revan's later search would extend to other Rakatan sites.

KASHYYYK'S STAR MAP: source and society
Historical evidence and chronology
Around 3961 BBY, a pre-amnesia Revan encountered an ancient Rakatan Star Map in Kashyyyk's Shadowlands. Knights of the Old Republic presents the machine as part of a dispersed network preserving navigation data that could reveal the Star Forge. The date is reconstructed from later biographical material rather than shown on a calendar in the game's initial 3956 BBY scenes. The Shadowlands location should not be confused with Jolee Bindo's exile or the specific moment of Zaalbar's family conflict.
Institutions, people and material consequences
An object installed by a long-collapsed imperial system remained capable of influencing new struggles. The map made archaeologically preserved information into strategic power, while its location among Wookiee communities illustrates how ancient technologies can survive inside landscapes inhabited and interpreted by later peoples. The machine's mere existence does not establish that every Wookiee understood Rakatan history or consented to its military use.

Ancient infrastructure reenters galactic politics
The Star Map had survived for tens of thousands of years after the collapse of the Infinite Empire.
Its information became strategically important to a commander fighting a completely different war.
Military investigation becomes archaeological pursuit
Revan's search increasingly crossed the boundary between wartime strategy and exploration of ancient dark-side sites.
Anthropological assessment
The Star Map shows how ancient technologies can become active political actors when later societies rediscover and reinterpret them.
Archives and artifacts can outlast their makers long enough to reshape conflicts no original creator could have anticipated.
The Old Republic / connected history
A Rakatan archive survives in the Shadowlands
The Star Map on Kashyyyk belonged to infrastructure left by the Rakatan Infinite Empire. Its location within the forest's Shadowlands illustrates how an ancient galactic power could leave machines beneath ecosystems and communities that subsequently developed in very different ways. Legends reference chronologies sometimes place Revan's early encounter with a Kashyyyk map around 3961 BBY, while treating the broader multiworld search as taking place in 3960 BBY. That distinction should remain visible rather than being presented as certainty about each visit.
The local setting matters as much as the ancient coordinates. Wookiee society possessed its own ways of living with the forest and understanding the dangers of the Shadowlands. Later, the Star Map quest also intersected with Czerka Corporation's exploitation of Wookiee labor. The structure could be an intelligence asset for a visiting Jedi or Sith and at the same time sit within a contested landscape with people who had no reason to regard the Star Forge as their central concern.
Knowledge across imperial collapses
The device continued to preserve data after the state that had commissioned it ceased to exist. Its usefulness for later military actors shows that technical systems can outlive political regimes and become newly dangerous through reuse. A surviving machine does not preserve its creator's authority automatically.
Local sovereignty and ancient artifacts
The presence of an old monument should not erase the status of newer inhabitants. Searching for the device through Wookiee territory required crossing a social world with its own rules and history. The significance of the artifact depends partly on who can access and interpret it at a given moment.
Is the precise year of every Kashyyyk Star Map visit universally fixed?
No. Reference chronology and the game's reconstructed earlier events leave room for dating uncertainty. IDS retains an approximate early visit and separates it from the later player-directed route.

What the source establishes
In the original game the Builder Forge computer on Kashyyyk remembers Revan's earlier interaction, and one play sequence puts that meeting approximately five years before the 3956 BBY return. This supports a date near 3961 BBY. Other official Legends reference accounts place Revan and Malak's more complete Star Forge search after the Mandalorian Wars, closer to 3960 BBY.
Material culture and authority
The Rakatan system is both archaeological evidence and functioning infrastructure. Revan's earlier access and the later amnesiac return involve different kinds of knowledge: a vanished civilization's coordinates, Revan's engineered access controls, and memories that the Jedi Council had altered.
What the evidence does not resolve
This is a real continuity tension. The article should not silently merge an earlier Kashyyyk encounter with the multiworld search or treat all source dates as identical. The computer's five-year interval depends on dialogue conditions and a later date conversion.
Test your historical reading: Does the first Kashyyyk Star Map encounter definitely refer to the 3956 BBY game visit?
Explanation: No. The game itself records an earlier encounter; its date conflicts with some later reference chronology.
