As the final battle raged, Mandalore the Ultimate challenged Revan to a duel aboard the Mandalorian flagship. Revan defeated and mortally wounded him. Before dying, Mandalore admitted that a red-skinned Sith had manipulated him, first drawing him to a tomb on Rekkiad and then encouraging the invasion of the Republic. He gave Revan coordinates that could prove the story.

REVAN AND MANDALORE
Story evidence, dates and limitations
During the final battle at Malachor V, Mandalore the Ultimate confronted Revan and died following their duel. Later Legends accounts recount Mandalore revealing that a Sith figure had manipulated the Mandalorian war effort and providing the location of Rekkiad as a lead. Revan claimed the fallen leader's mask and later concealed it so that a new Mandalore could not easily unify the clans. This duel belongs inside the larger battle; the Mass Shadow Generator was activated as a distinct part of the engagement.
Social history and consequences
The leader's death had symbolic effects beyond the tactical duel. The Mandalorian mask served as a sign of legitimate succession and collective leadership. Revan's decision to remove it was an intervention in political tradition as well as a private trophy claim. The dying confession also reframed the war from a solely Republic–Mandalorian contest to one influenced by a hidden Sith state. Distinguish the evidence Mandalore gave from a claim that every fighter knew about those patrons.

The war's leader discovers he was used
Mandalore had sought a great conflict, but Sith influence directed that desire toward the Republic.
Manipulation worked by exploiting an ambition that already existed.
The mask changes hands
Revan took Mandalore's Mask, the symbol through which Mandalorian leadership could be claimed.
Removing it helped prevent immediate reunification after defeat.
Anthropological assessment
Mandalore's confession complicates simple perpetrator-versus-puppet narratives.
External manipulation can shape decisions without erasing the responsibility of leaders who willingly pursue conquest.
The Old Republic / connected history
The duel that changed the meaning of the war
The confrontation at Malachor V put Revan directly against Mandalore the Ultimate, the figure who had united the Neo-Crusaders and committed them to a war against the Republic. Their duel took place during a wider operation in which Republic forces had been drawn into a battle intended to trap the Mandalorian fleet. It matters that this was a military turning point rather than an isolated contest of personal skill. The outcome changed the ability of the clans to coordinate their campaign, while the Mass Shadow Generator determined the terrible cost of the victory.
Mandalore's final warning gave Revan an explanation for the Sith influence behind the war. The leader had acted on his own ambition for conquest, but he had also been encouraged and guided by an unknown power. Revan took the mask of Mandalore after the duel. It functioned as more than personal equipment: the object represented the recognized office through which one leader could draw together clans that often disagreed. The removal of that symbol became central to the political disorganization that followed defeat.
The confession did not absolve the conqueror
An external Sith power may have encouraged Mandalore to attack, but he still assembled troops, governed the campaign and chose violence. Calling him a puppet would erase the decisions through which Mandalorian forces occupied worlds and harmed civilians. A stronger reading places manipulation and agency together: the Emperor's scheme worked partly because it appealed to ambitions Mandalore already held.
Victory creates the next investigation
Revan did not regard the last duel as proof that the Republic had learned the entire cause of the war. The warning pointed toward Rekkiad and a wider Sith network. The end of one military campaign therefore opened a clandestine search that eventually turned two Jedi into the leaders of another devastating conflict.
What did Mandalore's last account actually establish?
It established his claim that Sith influence helped direct the invasion and gave Revan a lead to investigate. It did not document every wartime decision or make the Mandalorian leader free of responsibility.

Malachor V · duel and the collapse of a war
What the source establishes
At Malachor V, Revan defeated Mandalore the Ultimate in single combat as Republic and Mandalorian fleets fought nearby. The defeated Mandalore revealed information about outside Sith influence over the war. Revan kept the mask associated with Mandalorian leadership and subsequently hid it, affecting the clans' ability to reunify.
Material culture and authority
A leader's death does not automatically destroy a political community, but control of a legitimizing object can complicate succession. The mask was not merely armor: it was an emblem used to recognize the individual accepted as Mandalore. Its removal became part of the postwar settlement.
What the evidence does not resolve
Revan's duel and the Mass Shadow Generator's devastating activation are connected phases of the larger battle, not one single act performed by the same person. Bao-Dur built the generator and Meetra Surik was the one who activated it.
Test your historical reading: Did Revan personally activate the Mass Shadow Generator during the duel?
Explanation: No. The generator was a separate operation, activated by Meetra Surik as part of the larger plan.
