SATELE SHAN IS BORN
Events, dates and source limits
Satele Shan was born on Brentaal IV in 3699 BBY to Jedi Knight Tasiele Shan, a descendant of Revan and Bastila Shan. Satele inherited Force sensitivity and later became a Jedi, but her birth was not the moment she entered the Jedi Order. Her mother's controversial views about attachment became an institutional issue and Tasiele later faced exile from the Order. By 3681 Satele was studying under Jedi Battlemaster Kao Cen Darach on Korriban and witnessed the Sith Empire's surprise return. The time between infancy and wartime service belongs to her training and family history, not a single event in 3699.
Anthropology and material consequences
The Shan family shows how genealogy creates social expectations without determining personal action. Descendants of influential Jedi may receive attention from institutions concerned with family precedent, yet each generation faces different political circumstances. Satele's later authority depended upon mentorship, training and public responsibilities, not ancestry alone. Debates over attachment and Tasiele's treatment also illustrate how religious and educational institutions set rules about household relationships, sometimes imposing costs on relatives who have not themselves broken those rules.

Her birth marks the arrival of the generation that will experience the Great Galactic War from its opening battles through the Treaty of Coruscant.
Anthropological assessment
Lineage gave Satele symbolic weight, but institutions still judged her through training, service, and political controversy surrounding her family.

Family lineage does not dictate a future Jedi career
Satele Shan was born on Brentaal Four and descended from Bastila Shan, according to the official SWTOR biography. The 3699 BBY date comes from retrospective Legends chronology, rather than a public birth record in that biography. Her wartime training, activities as a Padawan during the attack on Korriban, and later leadership belong to different periods. An archive organized around years should not make an adult Grand Master's accomplishments appear to have occurred in her childhood.
Lineage can carry a story of ancestry and belonging, but it cannot prove a child's later choices or identify every feature of the household. The official portrait of Satele documents a celebrated public figure. It does not establish exact childhood conversations or confirm that everyone around her anticipated the Sith Empire's return. An anthropological reading separates the influence of kinship from the social practices of training, mentorship and professional authority.
IDS places the birth as one beginning of a longer institutional history. It matters because the person later credited with rebuilding the Jedi community was formed through relationships, not because leadership was biologically fixed. Tython's navigational recovery and resettlement identifies a later contribution, and her Council leadership shows a different stage still. The current adult illustration is not evidence of the infant's appearance or the specific conditions of her birth.
Source challenge: Does Satele's official adult biography certify the precise 3699 BBY birth date?
What the evidence shows: No. It establishes her Brentaal Four origin, ancestry and later career; the exact year comes from later Legends dating.
Primary official source: Official Satele Shan biography. Official story text supports the identified setting and events, but precise BBY dates, private dialogue and complete witness accounts may require additional primary-game or reference-book checking. The anthropological analysis here is IDS interpretation, not a quotation from a character.
