An Imperial trap at Lothal
As the Ghost crew became more active in a coordinated rebel movement, Darth Vader arrived at Lothal with a plan to locate and damage it. Imperial authorities used the threatened defection of Minister Maketh Tua to draw the rebels into another confrontation.
The rebel force proves vulnerable
Kanan and Ezra could resist Vader only briefly. The Sith Lord then tracked the rebels toward their larger fleet and used his TIE fighter to inflict devastating losses on Phoenix Squadron and its command ship.
Recognition across the Force
Ahsoka Tano, working with the cell through the Fulcrum identity, became aware of a powerful presence. Vader likewise sensed that his former apprentice had survived, giving both a new and personally significant reason to confront the other.
Anthropological assessment
The destruction of Phoenix assets demonstrates the vulnerability of a growing movement when scattered cells become more visible. Coordination brings resources and communication but can also concentrate valuable targets for the Imperial military.

Vader attacks Phoenix Squadron
What the original story establishes
Following the Grand Inquisitor's defeat, Darth Vader personally pursued the Lothal rebels. Imperial forces used Minister Maketh Tua as part of a trap and mounted operations that brought the Ghost crew into conflict with Vader. A later space engagement caused devastating losses to Phoenix Squadron. His intervention escalated a local pursuit into an attack on a larger emerging rebel network.
Culture, power and material life
A small cell became visible to the Empire through the movement of ships, officials and information. Vader's tactics targeted not just individuals but the infrastructure required to maintain a squadron. In response, rebel leaders had to balance direct resistance with preserving the limited crews and vessels that made continued action possible.
