The New Republic loses its capital

The invading Yuuzhan Vong assaulted Coruscant with tremendous forces after months of military losses and political confusion. The capital was among the galaxy's most densely inhabited worlds and a center of government, transport, and collective memory. Its defenses could not hold.

A political leadership collapses

Chief of State Borsk Fey'lya remained as the government disintegrated and died during the invasion. Surviving officials and military commanders dispersed, attempting to maintain civilian institutions without their normal capital and communication networks.

The world becomes Yuuzhan'tar

The invaders renamed Coruscant for their lost homeworld and began turning portions of the ecumenopolis into an environment based on their biotechnology and ecology. This project involved the displacement and suffering of existing populations as well as a fundamental remaking of material culture.

Refugees and surviving resistance

People fled or hid while Jedi and military personnel reorganized. The capital's loss forced the New Republic's supporters to reconsider the adequacy of their previous political structures and their methods of fighting the war.

Anthropological assessment

Renaming and terraforming a conquered capital can be a deliberate assertion of sovereignty. The invaders did not merely occupy buildings: they attempted to change the city's ecological form and the historical meanings attached to it.

Interactive archival analysis

Was Coruscant immediately rebuilt as a New Republic capital after the first assault?

No. It was captured and transformed by the Yuuzhan Vong before being recaptured in 29 ABY.
