The captain before the outlaw

Andronikos Revel was not always an opponent of the Republic. BioWare's official Holonet account describes a highly regarded Republic Navy officer who rose rapidly and became one of the service's youngest starship captains. That detail is central to his life. The navigation, command, combat and discipline he later applies outside the law were developed within the same state he eventually defied. Reducing him to a generic smuggler or calling him a former Imperial officer erases the important reversal at the beginning of his story.

A disastrous Imperial ambush ended his official career. The publisher says he turned against the Republic and became a pirate; it does not offer a complete tribunal transcript or establish every command decision that led to his break. There is therefore a difference between what his biography reports and the explanation a reader might infer. An institution can train a capable officer without retaining his loyalty. Revel's departure is not evidence that he never knew professional duty, and his subsequent violence is not excused simply because his own career collapsed.

Piracy, command and betrayal

For years Revel raided vessels in both Republic and Imperial space. His formidable skill as a pilot and his ruthlessness made him feared. Accounts of his years aboard the Sky Princess also describe a captain unusually willing to pilot his own ship rather than delegate that essential responsibility. Ship command in this context is personal and fragile: a captain depends on people who can refuse orders, withhold information, or seize control of a vessel. Unlike a commissioned commander, he cannot count on the same formal legal protections when crew loyalties turn.

His pirate career was interrupted after the crew attacked an Imperial ship carrying valuable artifacts. Imperial retaliation threatened the group, and Revel's own crew mutinied. They abandoned him to Imperial captors so that they could retain the stolen cargo and escape pursuit. Revel spent roughly a year as a prisoner and emerged determined to punish the mutineers. The official record establishes the mutiny, the imprisonment and his revenge motive. It does not establish that revenge repairs the losses suffered by the victims of his earlier raids.

A gunfighter in a Sith story

The Sith Inquisitor's original campaign revolves around Force training, forbidden knowledge, political succession and dangerous artifacts. Revel enters this story with a different kind of expertise: starships, illicit networks and armed confrontations. His presence broadens the Inquisitor's circle beyond Sith apprentices and Imperial functionaries. A rising Sith cannot complete every task through ritual knowledge alone. Transport, informal contacts and experienced companions are part of the practical infrastructure of power.

The relationship also contains an unresolved contradiction. Revel dislikes authority and betrayal, while the Sith system is built around hierarchy, patronage and the expectation that subordinates serve ambitious superiors. His cooperation does not demonstrate that he suddenly endorses Sith political values. It can instead be understood as an alliance with someone whose resources and objectives intersect his own. In the player's story, dialogue choices shape trust and, for eligible female Inquisitors, an optional romance. Neither closeness nor hostility should be presented as the single mandatory outcome of every playthrough.

What the uniform did not erase

Revel's shipboard training survived his rejection of the Republic. This is a useful distinction between occupational identity and institutional membership. A navigator can change employers or become an outlaw without losing the expertise produced in naval schools and operations. Histories that sort people into lawful military personnel and unlawful pirates may overlook precisely these transfers of personnel, equipment and methods.

His facial tattoos and distinctive personal style are visible features of the game character, but they do not establish an invented ethnic affiliation or ritual practice. The dossier treats his material life through supported evidence: starships, pistols, ship crews, captured cargo and navigational skill. There is no need to invent an ancestry or uniform tradition to make this biography socially interesting.

Anthropological assessment: legality and allegiance

Revel illustrates how law and legitimacy follow institutions rather than a weapon's physical form. A Navy captain and pirate may both carry blasters, command a ship and board another vessel. Their authority is assigned differently by Republic and Imperial jurisdictions, and their conduct still has to be judged on its consequences. In Revel's case, the Holonet explicitly reports ruthless treatment of captured crews. Political alienation cannot be used to ignore those victims.

His personal betrayal raises a second question: why do pirate crews obey? Their organization depends on bargaining, fear, trust, access to loot and shared danger. The mutiny over artifacts demonstrates that a supposedly independent captain may depend on the very people most able to remove him. Joining a powerful Sith creates access to protection and opportunity, but also exposes him to a new asymmetry of power.

In the wider class story, his history invites a comparison between a state military that can discipline and exclude officers, a pirate crew that can overthrow its captain, and Sith patronage that can elevate or destroy followers. Each claims authority through different institutions. None makes violence harmless merely by choosing a preferred label.

Compare evidence across three institutional contexts

Republic Navy · What should a researcher test?

Identify how rank, recognition and work are documented before inferring legitimacy or ethics.

Independent pirate crew · What should a researcher test?

Distinguish official membership, personal motives and observable behavior; a label does not fully explain conduct.

Sith Inquisitor's shipboard crew · What should a researcher test?

Compare the duties, protections and dependence built into the relationship, and separate player choices from fixed biography.

Evidence checks

Which government first trained Revel?

The Galactic Republic; he was a Republic Navy captain, not an Imperial captain.

They had raided an Imperial artifact shipment and sought to keep the cargo while escaping retaliation.

Does romance always happen?

No. It is an optional storyline for an eligible female Sith Inquisitor.

Are original class and Alliance recruitment the same event?

No. Tatooine belongs to the original campaign; Pirate's Life is a later Alliance Alert.
