Lightsabers, color crystals, dyes and relics
SWTOR / FIELD MANUAL · GAMEPLAY
CREW SKILLS
Choose a profession. Command your companions. Build a lightsaber, craft a dye, design Sith armor, or turn scavenged resources into useful gear. This hands-on guide explains all 14 Crew Skills without forcing you to memorize confusing menus.
01 / BEFORE YOU START
Three roles. One production chain.
Crew Skills are professions managed through your companions. They are independent of your Origin Story and Combat Style.
Make finished items using schematics. You may learn one crafting skill on a character, even with three subscriber slots.
Find resources on planets or send companions on gathering missions. You can choose multiple gathering skills instead of crafting.
Send companions away on paid assignments to retrieve specialized materials and other rewards. They do not require searching planetary harvest nodes.
02 / INTERACTIVE PLANNER
Build your three-skill team
Pick what you want to produce and how you prefer to obtain materials. This planner recommends compatible skills; it does not change anything in SWTOR.
Gather power crystals and artifact fragments
Send companions to retrieve gemstones
Self-supply combination: Artifice + Archaeology + Treasure Hunting. Make the items you enjoy using.
Power crystals, color crystals and fragments are collected through Archaeology; gemstones come from Treasure Hunting.
03 / THE PROFESSION DIRECTORY

Showing 14 of 14 Crew Skills
Artifice
What it does
Lightsabers, color crystals, dye modules, hilts, relics, generators and focuses.
Practical notes ↓
A favorite for weapon color and armor appearance. Some dyes come from the trainer; other dye schematics depend on reputation. Black and Black dye is not craftable.
Synthweaving
What it does
Force-themed robes, armor appearances, and critical, defense or alacrity augments.
Practical notes ↓
Useful for Sith and Jedi fashion, although adaptive outfits can be worn by other classes. Its augments can improve eligible gear from any source.
Armormech
What it does
Tech-oriented armor appearances and selected augments.
Practical notes ↓
Makes armor styled for Troopers, Agents, Smugglers and Bounty Hunters. Wearing or outfitting most adaptive appearances is not locked to those classes.
Armstech
What it does
Blasters, blaster barrels, vibroweapons and selected augments.
Practical notes ↓
A weapon and augment profession. Many older crafted weapons cannot be upgraded to match endgame gear, so inspect a schematic before spending credits.
Cybertech
What it does
Earpieces, equipment modifications, grenades, some vehicle and ship components.
Practical notes ↓
Creates useful technical items; available schematics and competitive endgame gear change across updates.
Biochem
What it does
Medpacs, stims, adrenals and biological equipment.
Practical notes ↓
Useful for players who routinely use combat consumables. You can fully enjoy a class story without selecting this skill.
Archaeology
What it does
Power crystals, color-crystal materials and artifact fragments.
Practical notes ↓
Right-click crystal or artifact nodes in the open world, or send companions on Archaeology missions. Gathering locations depend on material grade.
Bioanalysis
What it does
Biological samples and other organic crafting components.
Practical notes ↓
Collect from certain plants and defeated creatures or send companions on Bioanalysis missions. This is the normal material source for Biochem.
Scavenging
What it does
Scavenged metals and compounds from scrap and eligible droids.
Practical notes ↓
A practical pick for technology-heavy worlds. Some defeated droids and scattered scrap nodes can be scavenged.
Slicing
What it does
Electronic lockboxes, data and sliced tech materials.
Practical notes ↓
Open eligible lockboxes while exploring and send companions for special rewards. Profits vary; mission cost can exceed the credits you recover.
Diplomacy
What it does
Medical supplies and companion gifts, with some light or dark alignment options.
Practical notes ↓
Send a companion on a Diplomacy assignment; these are not harvest nodes you find on a planet.
Investigation
What it does
Researched compounds and other investigative mission rewards.
Practical notes ↓
Often chosen to support blaster and weapon crafting. Mission rewards are different from items collected by Scavenging.
Treasure Hunting
What it does
Gemstones, lockboxes and companion gifts.
Practical notes ↓
A key complement to Artifice. Gemstones come from companion missions, not from Archaeology nodes.
Underworld Trading
What it does
Luxury fabrics, underworld metals and companion gifts.
Practical notes ↓
Choose the relevant reward type for your recipe: Synthweaving often needs fabrics, while tech-armoring professions can need metals.
No matching profession. Try a different item or skill name.
04 / HANDS-ON WALKTHROUGHS
Choose your crafting profession
Six distinct beginner routes. Choose a profession to see which trainers to visit, what to gather, which companion missions to run and what to craft first.
Select any crafting skill above, or use the profession planner earlier on this page. The walkthrough and checklist update together; progress for each craft is kept separately.
Selected walkthrough: Artifice · 8 steps
STEP-BY-STEP / ARTIFICE
Artifice: Crystals, lightsabers and dyes
Learn the material chain from crystal nodes to a finished cosmetic or modification. Not every dye schematic is sold by the trainer.
Locate the three Fleet trainers
Visit the Strongholds & Crew Skills section of the Imperial or Republic Fleet. Talk to the crafting trainer to learn your profession, and locate the nearby gathering and mission-skill trainers.
Learn the skill combination
Select Artifice as the crafting skill, Archaeology for crystals and artifact fragments, and Treasure Hunting for gemstones. You can have only one crafting profession per character.
Choose a starter schematic
Open the Crew Skills window with B. Start with a schematic appropriate to your crafting level. Read its exact ingredient list before collecting or purchasing anything. Find a low-grade bonded component or another recipe the trainer currently offers.
Collect Archaeology materials
Harvest crystal and artifact nodes on a suitable planet, or send a companion on Archaeology gathering missions. Confirm the resource grade matches the schematic.
Send a Treasure Hunting mission
Choose a companion mission that rewards the gemstone grade specified in your chosen schematic. Check the listed reward type and credit cost.
Check vendors and material storage
Check the Crew Skills Trade Vendor for ordinary vendor components, then check your Materials Bay before paying GTN prices for supplies you may already own.
Queue and finish your first craft
Assign an available companion to craft the schematic. Return to your trainer as your crafting level increases and learn new schematics that match the items you actually want to make. If you built a bonded component, use it in a later finished-item recipe.
Customize something you will keep
Browse color-crystal and dye recipes, then preview the result in the appearance system. Check the resulting stats and dye restrictions instead of assuming every crafted item is an upgrade.
STEP-BY-STEP / SYNTHWEAVING
Synthweaving: Sith robes, armor and augments
Craft Force-themed clothing and learn which augments the profession can make. Use Outfit Designer to keep the appearance even when combat gear changes.
Find the Synthweaving trainer
Visit the Strongholds & Crew Skills section of the Imperial or Republic Fleet. Talk to the crafting trainer to learn your profession, and locate the nearby gathering and mission-skill trainers.
Learn the supporting skills
Take Synthweaving plus Archaeology and Underworld Trading. Archaeology gives crystal and artifact materials; Underworld Trading missions provide luxury fabrics and other applicable goods.
Inspect a low-grade schematic
Open the Crew Skills window with B. Start with a schematic appropriate to your crafting level. Read its exact ingredient list before collecting or purchasing anything. Start with a component or wearable armor piece your trainer currently teaches.
Collect the crystal ingredients
Harvest suitable Archaeology nodes on your current planet or send a gathering mission. Check which material grade the recipe expects.
Order fabrics from your companion
Choose an Underworld Trading mission that rewards luxury fabrics of the appropriate grade. Metals are a different reward type and will not replace fabric ingredients.
Fill the remaining material slots
Check the Crew Skills Trade Vendor for ordinary vendor components, then check your Materials Bay before paying GTN prices for supplies you may already own. Check any fabric costs against the GTN before queueing a lengthy mission.
Craft your first armor piece
Assign an available companion to craft the schematic. Return to your trainer as your crafting level increases and learn new schematics that match the items you actually want to make. Inspect the finished piece to see its appearance and equipment properties.
Plan your next armor upgrade
Preview the new robe or armor in Outfit Designer. At higher levels, look for the augments your schematics support and confirm compatibility with the item you plan to augment.
STEP-BY-STEP / ARMORMECH
Armormech: Tech armor, plates and augments
Produce armor appearances for technological character styles and explore the augments available from the profession.
Speak to an Armormech trainer
Visit the Strongholds & Crew Skills section of the Imperial or Republic Fleet. Talk to the crafting trainer to learn your profession, and locate the nearby gathering and mission-skill trainers.
Choose a compatible material team
Learn Armormech, Scavenging and Underworld Trading. Scavenging handles ordinary metals and compounds; Underworld Trading supplies specialist metals when a schematic requires them.
Select your first armor schematic
Open the Crew Skills window with B. Start with a schematic appropriate to your crafting level. Read its exact ingredient list before collecting or purchasing anything. Read whether it needs a crafted component or a finished piece first.
Scavenge from the environment
Collect appropriate scrap nodes and eligible defeated droids. Planet and resource grade determine which metal or compound you receive.
Send Underworld Trading for metals
Choose the Underworld Trading reward category containing underworld metals of the required grade. Fabric missions are primarily relevant to other recipes.
Compare supply costs
Check the Crew Skills Trade Vendor for ordinary vendor components, then check your Materials Bay before paying GTN prices for supplies you may already own. If a metal stack is expensive, try Scavenging missions or another planet before buying everything.
Craft a first armor item
Assign an available companion to craft the schematic. Return to your trainer as your crafting level increases and learn new schematics that match the items you actually want to make. Inspect its appearance and equipment requirements before equipping it.
Make the armor useful over time
Use Outfit Designer for a look you like. As you progress, review available Armormech augments instead of treating low-level armor as permanent endgame gear.
STEP-BY-STEP / ARMSTECH
Armstech: Blasters, weapon parts and augments
Learn how to make weapons and weapon components, including barrels, and understand why compatible item modifications matter more than cosmetic looks alone.
Learn Armstech on Fleet
Visit the Strongholds & Crew Skills section of the Imperial or Republic Fleet. Talk to the crafting trainer to learn your profession, and locate the nearby gathering and mission-skill trainers.
Select Scavenging and Investigation
Scavenging collects metals and compounds from scrap and eligible droids. Investigation missions supply researched compounds for weapon schematics.
Inspect a weapon or barrel schematic
Open the Crew Skills window with B. Start with a schematic appropriate to your crafting level. Read its exact ingredient list before collecting or purchasing anything. Confirm the weapon type and whether your chosen item is modifiable.
Gather scavenged metal and compounds
Find scrap nodes or droids that allow Scavenging, or dispatch companions on the matching grade of gathering mission.
Run an Investigation mission
Look for researched compound rewards in the grade required by the schematic. Do not confuse an Investigation reward with a Scavenging metal.
Source any remaining components
Check the Crew Skills Trade Vendor for ordinary vendor components, then check your Materials Bay before paying GTN prices for supplies you may already own. Compare researched-compound GTN prices with the cost and expected results of a companion mission.
Craft your first weapon component
Assign an available companion to craft the schematic. Return to your trainer as your crafting level increases and learn new schematics that match the items you actually want to make. Inspect the crafted barrel or weapon and verify which combat styles can use it.
Decide whether to keep or sell
Compare weapon stats, modifications, and actual GTN sale prices. A cosmetic blaster is not automatically an upgrade for your current class.
STEP-BY-STEP / CYBERTECH
Cybertech: Earpieces, modifications and gadgets
Work toward equipment modifications, earpieces and other mechanical items, checking each schematic rather than assuming older recipes are best-in-slot.
Meet the Cybertech trainer
Visit the Strongholds & Crew Skills section of the Imperial or Republic Fleet. Talk to the crafting trainer to learn your profession, and locate the nearby gathering and mission-skill trainers.
Learn the companion material skills
Choose Cybertech, Scavenging and Underworld Trading. Scavenging supplies ordinary metal and compound grades; Trading provides specialist underworld metals.
Pick a practical first schematic
Open the Crew Skills window with B. Start with a schematic appropriate to your crafting level. Read its exact ingredient list before collecting or purchasing anything. Begin with the component or earpiece/modification the trainer currently offers.
Collect Scavenging materials
Harvest scrap or eligible defeated droids, or send a suitable Scavenging mission. Check the material grade carefully.
Request specialty metals
Send a companion on Underworld Trading missions for underworld metals when your recipe asks for them. The exact rewards depend on mission grade.
Check the material budget
Check the Crew Skills Trade Vendor for ordinary vendor components, then check your Materials Bay before paying GTN prices for supplies you may already own. Avoid spending more on components than an equivalent item costs on the GTN.
Queue your first Cybertech item
Assign an available companion to craft the schematic. Return to your trainer as your crafting level increases and learn new schematics that match the items you actually want to make. Inspect it to verify the modification slot or equipment slot for which it is intended.
Evaluate the next useful schematic
Compare crafted modifications or earpieces to your current gearing system. Consider optional gadgets or mounts later, but verify recipe availability first.
STEP-BY-STEP / BIOCHEM
Biochem: Medpacs, stims and adrenals
Craft medical and temporary combat consumables and understand when a reusable high-level recipe may have separate requirements.
Visit a Biochem trainer
Visit the Strongholds & Crew Skills section of the Imperial or Republic Fleet. Talk to the crafting trainer to learn your profession, and locate the nearby gathering and mission-skill trainers.
Learn Bioanalysis and Diplomacy
Choose Biochem as your sole crafting skill. Bioanalysis supplies organic resources; Diplomacy missions supply specialist medical materials.
Inspect a medpac schematic
Open the Crew Skills window with B. Start with a schematic appropriate to your crafting level. Read its exact ingredient list before collecting or purchasing anything. Start with a low-grade recipe you can actually use while leveling.
Collect organic samples
Gather from suitable plants or eligible defeated creatures, or run Bioanalysis gathering missions. Match the resource grade to the schematic.
Send a medical-supplies mission
Use Diplomacy and choose the medical-supply reward category for your recipe. Companion gifts are a different reward type.
Fill gaps in your ingredient list
Check the Crew Skills Trade Vendor for ordinary vendor components, then check your Materials Bay before paying GTN prices for supplies you may already own. Medpac materials are often obtainable from multiple sources, but compare mission fees with GTN pricing.
Craft your first medpac
Assign an available companion to craft the schematic. Return to your trainer as your crafting level increases and learn new schematics that match the items you actually want to make. Inspect the item level and effects before deciding whether to use or trade it.
Choose your next consumable
Explore stims and adrenals at higher crafting levels. Do not assume every recipe is reusable or that older schematics are valuable in current endgame play.

06 / SIX VISUAL DESIGN LABS
Make it your own: interactive equipment previews
Each crafting profession gets its own interactive visual. Switch armor silhouettes, weapon shapes, circuits and medical displays to compare designs.
Visual lab: Artifice · Dye preview
These are original visual diagrams, not exact in-game models or confirmed recipes. Check SWTOR schematics for actual ingredients and requirements.
ARTIFICE / LIVE VISUAL
Dye design studio
Compare black dye combinations on illustrated Sith armor.
Choose a dye module
Dyes usually change a primary area and a secondary trim color. The same dye can appear different on metal, cloth or leather. Preview the actual armor before paying.
Black and Deep Red
Craftable reputation schematic. Graphic is illustrative.
Black + Light Gray: Artifice trainer schematic at skill 470. Black + Deep Red: reputation schematic associated with Oricon. Black + Black: a Cartel Market dye, commonly traded on the GTN, not crafted through Artifice.
Before applying: Ctrl + left-click the dye and armor to preview, check that the armor has a dye slot, and remember the dye is single-use. A chestpiece dye can affect an entire outfit when Unify Colors is enabled, but not every dyeable surface will match.

A healing-container concept, shown with a red fluid indicator.
Visual concept only. This does not preview the game client, confirm a schematic, or calculate equipment stats.
07 / RESOURCE ROUTES
Where to find Archaeology materials
Resource grades follow content regions rather than a single fixed path. These are examples of published gathering areas, not guaranteed active node locations.
Starter crystals and fragments; Empire players commonly begin on Dromund Kaas.
Look for higher-grade Archaeology nodes as you progress through these planetary areas.
Faction-dependent planetary levels lead to different resource grades.
Later planets span several grades. Check the specific resource tooltip and node type.
High-grade resource hunting varies by area and expansion.
Later expansion gathering zones; not every high-level crafting material is a world harvest node.
Mission rewards are described by material grade and type. Before sending a companion, compare the actual schematic requirements with the listed mission reward type. For rare components, check the GTN or a second character. No planet guarantees every material at every grade.
08 / CREDITS AND EFFICIENCY
Craft, gather, or buy?
The GTN is a shortcut, not always the cheapest source. Learn when a companion mission is worth its time.
Right-click Archaeology nodes while traveling between story missions. This produces some ingredients without paying a mission fee, although it takes your time.
Choose Treasure Hunting missions for gemstones. Check mission grade, reward description and credit cost. A critical result can change the total rewards.
Common materials are often traded in stacks, but supply is server-dependent. Compare the total price to mission costs and check the Crew Skills Trade Vendor for white-border ingredients.
Gearing reality: you can equip several armor pieces, but crafting six pieces does not automatically beat one well-earned weapon or your existing endgame gear. Item rating, modifications, augments, stats and the current gearing system matter more than the number of crafted slots. Outfit Designer lets you wear a separate visual appearance without replacing your combat gear.
Companion efficiency: influence improves companion crafting speed and mission performance. It is not an automatic damage bonus from selecting a particular crafting profession, and profession choice does not need to match your Sith Warrior class.
09 / QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Answers before you commit
Can I learn Artifice and Synthweaving together?
No, not on one character. You can learn at most one crafting skill per character. Assign Synthweaving to an alternate character and share eligible materials or completed items as permitted.
Can I buy almost all crafting supplies on the GTN?
Many ordinary and specialist ingredients are player-tradable, but availability and price depend on server and grade. Some bind-on-pickup or activity-specific components cannot simply be purchased.
Will Artifice make my best-in-slot lightsaber?
Not necessarily. Artifice makes some weapons, hilts, modifications and relics, but endgame progression has separate gear systems. Choose Artifice for its crafting options and cosmetics, not a promise of best-in-slot equipment.
Can I make completely black armor dye?
Black and Black dye is not an Artifice schematic. Obtain the appropriate Cartel Market item, or buy a tradable copy on the GTN when listed. Artifice can make other black combinations.
Where do gems come from?
Treasure Hunting companion missions. Archaeology supplies crystal and artifact materials; the two skills have different reward pools.
Does a dye apply to an entire set?
Dyes attach to individual dyeable items and are consumed. Unify Colors can coordinate outfit pieces with the chest appearance, although specific pieces and textures may behave differently.
Is crafting required to finish SWTOR?
No. Class stories, expansions, Flashpoints and much of endgame can be played without a crafting profession. Crafting is an optional economic and customization system.
Why is a schematic gray, green, yellow or orange?
The schematic difficulty color signals its relevance for skill gains. Gray generally offers no further crafting-level progress, while higher-difficulty colors give better advancement. Visit your trainer as you level for appropriate new schematics.
