A war does not end with the Emperor's death
In 4 ABY the Empire still possessed active TIE fighter wings, munitions and commanders willing to punish systems that supported the new government. Imperial 204th Fighter Wing, nicknamed Shadow Wing, had become a dangerous target for New Republic Intelligence. Locating its ships demanded more than conventional patrol operations. Agent Caern Adan proposed a compact squadron whose mixture of fighters could undertake unfamiliar assignments without relying on an enormous fleet.
Five craft, five different experiences
Alphabet Squadron's pilots flew an X-wing, B-wing, U-wing, A-wing and Y-wing. Lieutenant Yrica Quell, a former Imperial pilot, became its commander, leading Chass na Chadic, Kairos, Wyl Lark and Nath Tensent. Their very different experiences of the war made cooperation difficult. The unusual arrangement also meant every member brought skills and limitations that could not simply be exchanged with those of another pilot.
Hera's role as mentor and commander
General Hera Syndulla supervised the developing unit aboard the Lodestar. Quell needed to build trust among people who did not automatically accept either her background or her leadership. Training exposed the limits of technical competence without mutual confidence. Hera's work connected the practical experience of the Ghost crew to a new, more formal Republic military organization.
A hunt shaped by memory
The squadron pursued Shadow Wing across changing fronts, and Quell's own past in the Imperial military made the mission intensely personal. New Republic leaders were attempting to defeat the final machinery of the Empire while also deciding how former Imperial personnel could be judged, trusted or reintegrated. A single unit thus embodied a larger transition from rebellion to government.
Anthropological interpretation
Alphabet Squadron illustrates the social work required to combine people into an institution. Equipment classification alone did not make the pilots a team. They needed shared procedures, trust and ways of discussing past political allegiances. The unit also raises questions about rehabilitation versus permanent exclusion for people who once served an authoritarian military.

Try the three evidence questions below. Each choice explores a real tension in the story rather than inventing a new Canon ending. Select one and the interpretation appears below.
Why did the pilots have five different starfighters?
Supported answer: The squadron deliberately combined varied capabilities to handle unusual missions.
Unsupported alternative: They had all been assigned identical TIE fighters.
