A trap around an unfinished superweapon
The Rebel Alliance learned of a second Death Star under construction near Endor. The plan called for a ground unit to disable its protective shield while a fleet attacked the station. Palpatine deliberately allowed the information to reach the Rebels, expecting to destroy them.
Ewok communities enter the fight
Han Solo, Leia and others encountered the indigenous Ewoks, who chose to help defeat the Imperial garrison. Their local knowledge, traps and coordinated attacks enabled the Rebels to disable the shield generator.
A second orbital victory
With the shield down, Lando Calrissian and Wedge Antilles led starfighters inside the unfinished station and struck its reactor. The Death Star exploded, destroying the Emperor's major command platform and damaging the Imperial fleet.
Anthropological assessment
The battle depended on cooperation across communities with very different cultures and military resources. The Ewoks were not merely part of the scenery; they exercised agency in deciding to fight an occupying power on their own moon.

Did the Rebel fleet win while Endor's shield generator remained fully active?
No. The ground coalition disabled the shield before the station was destroyed.

Endor was a connected ground, fleet and political crisis
The Rebel plan to destroy the second Death Star relied on disabling the Endor shield generator while Alliance ships engaged an Imperial trap in orbit.
The Alliance expected a vulnerable installation guarding an unfinished superweapon. Instead, the Emperor had positioned an Imperial fleet and substantial ground defenses to trap attackers. A sound account of the battle must distinguish the apparent opening that drew the Rebels into the operation from the actual defenses awaiting them. The ground team's task was not interchangeable with the fleet's: the strike team had to disable the shield so that fighters and the Millennium Falcon could enter the Death Star's structure and reach the reactor system.
The Ewoks' participation is vital to understanding why the Imperial defense failed. The forest moon was already their home; they were not brought there as Alliance military auxiliaries. Their familiarity with terrain, ability to organize and willingness to fight an occupying force altered the outcome when Rebel commandos faced defeat. Lucasfilm's Ewok and Han Solo Databank accounts describe attacks on Imperial soldiers and walkers, a captured scout walker and the destruction of the shield generator. The outcome was made possible by cooperation between people with different technologies and experiences, not by a single uniform chain of command.
Meanwhile, Admiral Ackbar's naval forces and the fighters led by Lando Calrissian and Wedge Antilles carried the battle into orbit. The destruction of the battle station depended on the timing of events on the surface and in space. Anakin Skywalker's final action against Palpatine occurred aboard the station but is a separate story of personal choice. Combining it with the destruction of the shield or the reactor attack would collapse different causal sequences. The Empire's defeat at Endor was monumental; later campaigns, Operation Cinder and Jakku demonstrate that neither Imperial violence nor the need to construct new political institutions ended in that instant.
Test the historical record: Could the Rebel fighters attack the reactor successfully while the second Death Star's planetary shield remained active?
Correction and insight: No. Destruction of the surface shield generator allowed Lando and Wedge to carry the assault inside the battle station.
