While the Republic and Sith Empire remained formally at war, both sides also raced to understand Darth Nul. Around 3624 BBY, Jedi Knight Tau Idair entered Nul's archive and encountered Darth Rivix. Their confrontation became a lightsaber duel over access to a past both governments wanted to control. Tau escaped with Nul's lightsaber and delivered it to the Alliance Commander, turning an archaeological artifact into an active intelligence lead.

The lightsaber is evidence, not merely a weapon
A lightsaber can preserve manufacturing choices, crystals, inscriptions, biometric traces, ritual associations, and social memory. Nul's weapon mattered because almost everything else about her had been deliberately erased.
Tau's objective was therefore not simply to collect a powerful object. Recovering it could anchor a historical person whose institutional record had been destroyed.
Tau and Rivix represent competing archives
Tau pursued the Nul mystery from a Republic and Jedi position. Rivix served a Sith political system whose own survival depended heavily on selective memory and secrecy.
The duel dramatized a struggle over who gets to possess and interpret evidence. Physical artifacts become politically dangerous when they contradict an official history.
Malgus remains the absent center of the investigation
Malgus had already forced multiple factions to ask why Nul mattered. Even imprisoned, his earlier actions determined where others searched and what questions they considered urgent.
That made the archive part of a larger information war: Malgus no longer needed to control every artifact personally if he could make others destabilize their own histories while pursuing them.

Historical narrative and cultural analysis
What the source supports
The contest over Darth Nul's lost history turns into a confrontation between Tau Idair and Darth Rivix. The existing story describes a Jedi recovering a personal object of a Sith whose historical record was intentionally erased. Treating the encounter only as a duel misses the significance of an object that can provide a tangible link to a suppressed past.
Institutions, beliefs and material culture
A recovered weapon is material culture, not merely a prize. Its importance lies in custody, classification, access and the possibility of testing rival stories about its owner. The exact designation of the duel is secondary to what the Old Wounds narrative shows. Modern archaeological claims about forensic findings are analogies of method, not canon evidence of tests actually performed.
Evidence limits and dating
These events follow SWTOR's Legends narrative. The BBY date is a historical placement and may not appear in the official release notes; a game's 2023–2025 publication date is not a fictional in-universe date. Dialogue and choices may vary, and unreported details remain unknown.

Why does Nul's lightsaber matter so much?
Because Nul had been systematically erased. A surviving personal object gives investigators something material that official archives cannot simply rewrite.
Did Tau defeat Rivix decisively?
The fixed historical outcome is that Tau escapes with the lightsaber. SWTOR's presentation can vary with player context, so IDS avoids overstating a clean military victory.
What makes this interactive history rather than just a duel?
The key question is not who swings a lightsaber better. It is which institution gets custody of evidence and therefore greater power to define Nul's past.
Anthropological assessment
The archive duel is fundamentally about custody of memory. Museums, states, religious orders, and intelligence services all gain power when they control rare evidence and determine who may examine it.
Nul's lightsaber also shows why material culture can threaten official narratives. Documents can be deleted. A surviving object can force institutions to explain a person they had chosen to make disappear.
