In 3969 BBY, the Jedi Covenant's First WatchCircle received five Padawans: Zayne Carrick, Shad Jelavan, Gharn, Kamlin, and Oojoh. Their Masters were Lucien Draay, Q'Anilia, Raana Tey, Xamar, and Feln. The students were transferred to the Jedi Tower on Taris, where the Covenant's secret mission to detect future Sith threats increasingly shaped ordinary Jedi training.
Five Masters, five students
The symmetry of the WatchCircle mattered to Covenant members who interpreted events through patterns and prophecy.
Each Master had a Padawan, but the relationships were unequal because the students did not know the secret mission shaping their teachers' decisions.
Zayne Carrick joins Lucien Draay
Zayne was not regarded as an exceptionally gifted student. Lucien often treated him as frustratingly accident-prone.
That ordinary teacher-student tension later became deadly when prophecy redefined the Padawans as possible future Sith.
Taris as a Covenant observation post
The Covenant's presence on Taris allowed its members to work within a major urban Jedi institution while maintaining separate loyalties.
Their secrecy meant formal Jedi oversight did not fully understand what the group was doing.
Explore the event
What was a WatchCircle?
Within the Covenant, WatchCircles were groups of Jedi seers and operatives monitoring the galaxy for signs of a Sith return.
Did the Padawans know about the Covenant?
Not in the way their Masters did. The secrecy created a severe information imbalance inside relationships that normally depended on trust.
Why is this assignment historically important?
Because the same five students would be targeted by their Masters five years later after a catastrophic prophetic interpretation.

Anthropological assessment
The WatchCircle turns apprenticeship into a problem of secret institutions. A relationship presented to students as education was simultaneously being used by teachers as part of a hidden security project.
When one side controls the true purpose of a relationship, consent and trust become structurally unequal even before overt abuse occurs.
Training, hidden authority and the five-year gap
The 3969 BBY assignment created a formal educational relationship between five Padawans and the Jedi Masters of the First WatchCircle. Zayne Carrick trained under Lucien Draay, Shad Jelavan under Q'Anilia, Gharn under Xamar, Kamlin under Raana Tey, and Oojoh under Feln. The public purpose was preparation for Jedi service; the masters also belonged to a clandestine group trying to detect threats from a feared Sith return.
Importantly, the 3969 transfer is not the 3964 Padawan Massacre. Five years of training and the subsequent visions preceded the masters' decision to kill their students. Treating the assignment itself as a massacre would erase the interval in which the students lived, learned and formed relationships. The difference also matters ethically: secrecy about an institutional mission and the later decision to commit murder were distinct actions with different evidence.

Taris: five new students beneath a hidden supervisory mission
What the original chronology can establish
In 3969 BBY, the Jedi Covenant's First WatchCircle was stationed at the Jedi Tower on Taris and received five Padawans: Zayne Carrick, Shad Jelavan, Oojoh, Gharn and Kamlin. Lucien Draay, Q'Anilia, Feln, Xamar and Raana Tey served as the five Masters. Among them, four had specialized skills as seers, while Lucien handled practical protection and administration. The five students began years of instruction under adults who also pursued the Covenant's secret efforts to detect the return of the Sith and to seek dangerous artifacts.
Institutional, cultural and material consequences
A teaching institution creates different knowledge positions for instructors and students. The Padawans were expected to obey their Masters and trust a process of training and evaluation. They did not know the hidden supervisory project through which their teachers interpreted ordinary events. Taris itself was an urban center divided by class and species, with important Republic and corporate interests nearby. The Covenant's internal secrecy meant the students could be judged through fears they had no opportunity to challenge. The fivefold arrangement later acquired ominous significance when the Masters had a vision on the Rogue Moon, but in 3969 BBY that disaster had not yet happened.
Uncertainty and continuity check
The 3969 BBY assignment should not be merged with the 3964 BBY Padawan Massacre. The precise teaching schedules of all five students and the contents of every secret assignment are not documented. Four seers plus Lucien's administrative role are more precise than referring to every WatchCircle Master as an equally gifted prophet.
Test your historical judgment: Were the five Padawans murdered in the year they first joined their Taris Masters?
Correction and educational insight: No. They were assigned in 3969 BBY. The massacre occurred five years later, in 3964 BBY.
