A government loses its capital

Yuuzhan Vong forces attacked Coruscant in 27 ABY and overran New Republic defenses. Refugee movements and fleet battles brought devastation to a planet with an enormous civilian population.

The political order fractures

Chief of State Borsk Fey'lya was killed in the attack, and the government abandoned its capital. Remaining officials and soldiers sought new centers from which to organize resistance.

Yuuzhan'tar reshapes a city

The victors renamed the city-world Yuuzhan'tar and transformed large areas with living biotechnology. Familiar buildings were destroyed or repurposed, and survivors hid among ruins and lower levels.

The meaning of forced change

Renaming and biological alteration were assertions of power. The transformation contested the memory and everyday environments of people who continued to live beneath occupation.

Anthropological assessment

The conquest demonstrates violence against urban infrastructure as well as against residents, and the role of place names in political domination.

Primary-source evidence and limitations

Star by Star documents the New Republic's worsening crisis during the Yuuzhan Vong war, while later New Jedi Order novels continue the occupation of Coruscant and its transformation. The fact that a novel depicts the wider conflict does not mean its cover portrays the fall of the capital or the subsequent renaming. Keep the 27 ABY conquest and the later physical remodeling distinct when interpreting the event; the naming of Yuuzhan'tar reflects the occupation's continuing claims to space and political authority.

The fall and attempted remaking of an urban world

The fall of Coruscant is a turning point in the Yuuzhan Vong War, not simply the loss of another military installation. The New Republic's governing center was a populated world of neighborhoods, transport networks and historical monuments. The loss of administrative control also exposed residents to dislocation and occupation. The publisher's New Jedi Order series materials describe the Republic's flight from the capital and the transformation of Coruscant into a Yuuzhan Vong stronghold. The original novels, including Star by Star and subsequent occupation narratives, are needed to establish the precise order of military decisions and episodes of civilian flight.

Renaming the planet Yuuzhan'tar and introducing living biotechnology asserted a different story about whose world it was supposed to be. The replacement or covering of older built surfaces is an institutional act as well as a material one: roads, civic monuments and everyday meeting places transmit social memory. Yet occupation does not automatically mean every earlier community has vanished, nor does it mean that all Yuuzhan Vong people personally direct the transformation. Surviving residents and dissenting voices complicate simple descriptions of total cultural replacement.

IDS interprets the transformation as a conflict over place, memory and authority. It must not confuse the devastation shown in the narrative with an independently measured death count. The Sernpidal dossier records the earlier stage of the invasion, and the 29 ABY conclusion deals with the problems of ending domination and rebuilding after the transformed capital is recovered.

Test the evidence: Does the name Yuuzhan'tar prove that all earlier inhabitants had disappeared?

Source judgment: No. A conqueror's renaming is an assertion of power, not a reliable census. The published series continues to treat Coruscant as a contested inhabited environment.
