An old world scarred by ancient wars
Ossus had been a Jedi center for millennia but suffered catastrophic damage during the Great Sith War long before the New Republic era. The Yuuzhan Vong War then left countless other worlds needing repair. By 122 ABY the Jedi were searching for ways to restore both physical environments and relationships fractured by that later invasion.
Kol Skywalker and the Yuuzhan Vong Shapers
Jedi Master Kol Skywalker supported a joint program with Nei Rin, a Yuuzhan Vong Master Shaper. The project tested living biotechnology on a desolate part of Ossus, asking whether knowledge that had once been used to transform conquered planets could instead help repair damage. The work was deliberately cooperative rather than a simple order imposed by a victorious military.
A striking recovery
Initial experiments succeeded, encouraging the prospect of repairing ecosystems on many damaged worlds. Plants and animals returned to terrain previously considered devastated. Some supporters imagined an era in which work shared by former enemies might create new trust and lessen the destructive consequences of earlier wars.
Why reconciliation was politically fragile
Survivors remembered the Yuuzhan Vong invasion as a period of immense violence. Trust in new experiments therefore depended on safety, transparency and demonstrated benefit. Opponents could exploit the possibility of failure to blame the entire population of former invaders for the actions of particular researchers.
Anthropological assessment
The Ossus Project is an example of postwar environmental repair tied to political reconciliation. Material restoration can create opportunities for cooperation, but technical success does not automatically remove prejudice or fears formed during war.

Was the Ossus Project created as a new Yuuzhan Vong invasion army?
No. Its purpose was ecological restoration and improved relations under Jedi and Shaper leadership.

Original comic sources: what is documented?
Historical interpretation
The official issue #44 synopsis identifies the project and its later failure on Wayland. This retrospectively corroborates that the project existed and involved Kol Skywalker and Yuuzhan Vong collaborators. It does not provide an original foundation scene or establish the precise 122 ABY founding date: that requires checking the wider Legends source chronology.
Test the evidence: Does the evidence of a later failed experiment mean the original project was designed to cause damage?
Explanation: No. An eventual failure does not establish the original goal; restoration and the subsequent sabotage are distinct historical claims.
Primary-source evidence and limitations
Marvel's official synopsis for Star Wars: Legacy #44 explicitly refers to Kol Skywalker and the Yuuzhan Vong's first failure in the Ossus Project on Wayland. It independently supports the project's later legacy and failure, but it does not itself verify the precise 122 ABY foundation date. That date and the full sequence of restoration experiments require checking the original Legacy comics and reference chronology. The accompanying Cade Skywalker portrait depicts the project founder's son, not Kol or the project work.
