Nomi Sunrider begins Jedi training on Ambria

After delivering Andur's Adegan crystals to Thon, Nomi survives another attack, uses battle meditation, and begins training with Jedi Master Thon.

After Andur's death, Nomi completed his mission and reached Jedi Master Thon on Ambria. Bogga's forces followed. During the skirmish, Nomi used battle meditation to turn attackers against one another and fought with a lightsaber. Thon began guiding her emerging Jedi path, which would develop through further training.

Nomi's choice was a beginning, not an instant promotion

What happens in the story

After Andur's murder, Nomi reached Ambria with Vima and A-3DO to continue the journey that had originally been intended for her husband. There she encountered the Tchuukthai Jedi Master Thon and his student Oss Wilum. Nomi was reluctant to become a lightsaber-wielding fighter after killing the criminals who attacked her family. The gang pursued her again, and protecting Thon and Vima required that she rethink her refusal to use the weapon.

Why the event matters

Marvel's retrospective describes issues #3–5 as the start of Nomi's path toward becoming a great Jedi. That framing differs from a claim that the first battle meditation or successful lightsaber defense automatically amounted to formal knighting on one exact date. Thon's instruction was a social relationship built through trust, practice and risk. Her extraordinary aptitude matters, but it does not erase continued learning or her independent decision to accept the role.

Was Nomi already a trained Jedi when Andur died?

No. She had accompanied Andur; the path toward her own training with Thon developed after his death.

Does Marvel describe her first stand as the end of her Jedi training?

No. Marvel's retrospective specifically presents the early Ambria events as the beginning of the path that made her a great Jedi.

Was Jedi Master Thon a standard humanoid instructor?

No. Thon was a Tchuukthai Jedi Master. His body and teaching setting broaden what Jedi authority looked like in the Legends Order.

An unusual talent appears immediately

Nomi displayed strong aptitude for battle meditation with little formal preparation.

Her ability became one of the defining skills of her later Jedi career.

A reluctant participant accepts a new role

Nomi had explicitly rejected the idea of galactic battles.

Experience forced her to reinterpret Jedi responsibility as something she could no longer avoid.

Anthropological assessment

Nomi's apprenticeship shows that demonstrated ability and sustained instruction can both shape a person's place within an institution.

Her reluctance also makes Jedi identity a negotiated moral role rather than a simple ambition.

Tales of the Jedi / Legends research

Nomi's transformation from traveler to apprentice

Nomi Sunrider's decision to follow the Jedi path developed after the killing of her husband Andur at the Stenness hyperspace terminal. On Ambria she encountered Master Thon, whom Andur had intended to study with. Nomi initially confronted grief, fear and uncertainty about taking up the lightsaber and responsibilities once associated with her spouse. Her eventual training established a life of her own rather than simply fulfilling Andur's abandoned plan.

Master Thon's appearance and methods made him an unusual representative of Jedi authority. The Tchuukthai Master trained in a world associated with dark-side danger and did not match the ordinary humanoid presentation often attached to Jedi in later stories. Nomi's instruction also brought her family, including Vima, into contact with wider Jedi relationships. What started as a journey seeking one man's advancement became the formation of a new Jedi whose future skills would influence the Great Sith War.

Apprenticeship after a family rupture

Nomi did not receive training because every bereaved relative automatically becomes a Jedi. She confronted a difficult choice within an existing religious institution and developed an identity through instruction and practice. The process retains her agency amid grief.

An unconventional teacher

Thon's example illustrates that Force knowledge and recognized Jedi authority could appear in bodies and places far removed from later standardized temple imagery. That diversity was part of the Old Republic-era Order, not a contradiction of Jedi membership.

Was Nomi already an established Jedi Knight when Andur died?

No. Her training with Thon followed the death and helped develop the abilities that later made her an important Jedi.

Ambria: an apprenticeship is more than an exceptional Force ability

The event established by the sources

After Andur's death, Nomi continued to Ambria with Vima and A-3DO, carrying the Adegan crystals intended for the Tchuukthai Jedi Master Thon. Thon's student Oss Wilum was also part of this teaching setting. Bogga's agents followed Nomi, and the ensuing confrontation forced her to defend herself and others. The story introduces her talent for battle meditation, the ability to influence the actions of those engaged in conflict. Her exceptional ability did not mean she had already completed Jedi training. She began learning from Thon over time.

Institutions, culture and power

An apprentice relationship depends on more than identifying a talented person. Thon became a teacher who could support Nomi's judgment and ethical choices in the aftermath of violence. She arrived at Ambria as a mother and bereaved spouse, not as an abstract military resource. Her situation also shows that the Jedi tradition included distant praxeums, teachers from different species and family responsibilities. Describing this as a sudden promotion to Jedi Master would erase the social and educational work through which she later developed her ability.

Where the evidence stops

The timing is based on the Legends chronology of the early Tales of the Jedi comics. Avoid implying that use of battle meditation conferred a rank or that Nomi abandoned care for Vima when she began training.

Check your interpretation: Did Nomi's first use of battle meditation establish that she was already a fully trained Jedi?

Correction and insight: No. The episodes depict the beginning of her training with Thon and a developing ability, not completion of Jedi education.
