A family flees an inherited danger
Dathan and Miramir knew that Palpatine's surviving agents wanted their Force-sensitive daughter Rey. The family moved between worlds seeking safety, using anonymous work and trade to avoid attracting attention. The danger concerned Rey's ancestry and the Sith Eternal's intention to use her, not a crime committed by the child.
A painful decision on Jakku
In 21 ABY the parents left young Rey on Jakku, entrusting her to Unkar Plutt in a desperate attempt to keep her away from pursuing Sith agents. She did not understand that they intended the separation to protect her. The experience became a defining childhood memory.
Ochi of Bestoon captures the parents
The Sith assassin Ochi pursued the family but failed to obtain the child's location. He killed Dathan and Miramir after they refused to reveal it. Their actions bought Rey time and enabled her to survive, while leaving her alone with a false understanding of why she had been abandoned.
Anthropological assessment
The account complicates outward appearances of abandonment. A child's separation from caregivers can result from coercion and mortal danger rather than rejection. Rey's later identity formed around a missing family narrative that only became accessible much later.

Did Rey's parents leave her because they had no affection for her?
No. They were trying to protect her from the Sith Eternal and died withholding her location.

Protection through separation
Dathan and Miramir leave Rey on Jakku to keep her away from Ochi of Bestoon and Palpatine's agents. Ochi subsequently captures and kills the parents without obtaining Rey's location. The account supplies background for Rey's later memories, while the film also shows her limited childhood understanding of why she was left behind.
For Rey, abandonment is experienced through the child's limited information; for her parents, separation is intended as protection under severe coercion. Both descriptions concern the same sequence from different standpoints. The episode raises ethical questions about secrecy and caregiving without justifying the murder or claiming every displaced child has the same experience.

Rey's separation on Jakku
Rey's childhood separation was a strategy her parents used while fleeing an assassin tied to Palpatine's interests. Dathan and Miramir's decision to leave her on Jakku should not be described as proof that they never cared about their daughter. Shadow of the Sith complicates the incomplete information Rey later received about her family, while The Rise of Skywalker depicts the broad reality of the attack.
Ochi of Bestoon killed Rey's parents after failing to secure the child. That sequence is different from the claim Rey once believed that her parents had simply abandoned her for profit. The story asks who controls information about family and how children interpret events they did not witness. A research illustration can show danger, concealment and loss without inventing an exact eyewitness record of Rey's experience.
Check your interpretation: Did Dathan and Miramir knowingly sell Rey to Palpatine?
Explanation: No. They were attempting to keep her hidden from him and his agents.

Separation, pursuit, and evidence available to a child
In Shadow of the Sith, Rey's parents live under threat from agents pursuing their daughter's connection to the Sith Emperor. Dathan and Miramir leave her on Jakku in an attempt to prevent her capture. Ochi of Bestoon later catches and kills them without obtaining her location. The novel supplies the adults' motives and the broader chase; Rey's remembered childhood scene in The Force Awakens supplies a much narrower viewpoint. The two kinds of evidence should not be conflated, because the young child did not know everything the audience learns from later accounts.
The official publisher description confirms Ochi's mission to bring Rey to Exegol and Luke and Lando's effort to help the threatened family. That description does not alone confirm the exact physical sequence or time of the parents' deaths. Those details require the novel and its relevant chapters, not a promotional synopsis. Nor does the separation establish that Rey was born on Jakku. Her earlier history is associated with Hyperkarn; the desert settlement is the place where she grows up after her parents' loss.
IDS considers the tension between care intended to protect a child and the harm caused when that child cannot understand the reason for separation. This is not a moral judgment on all families facing displacement; it is an analysis of this particular narrative. The birth dossier documents the geographic distinction. The parallel investigation explains why the Sith network's movements affected adults whom Rey had not yet met.
