A threat the New Republic does not yet recognize

Twenty-five years after the Battle of Yavin, the Legends New Republic was struggling to manage regional disputes, bureaucratic disagreement and unease about Jedi influence. Outside its boundaries, advance agents of an extragalactic civilization began operating in the Outer Rim. The first encounters appeared to be isolated disturbances rather than parts of an organized war.

An enemy using living technology

The Yuuzhan Vong manufactured biological ships and organisms for tasks that other societies assigned to mechanical technology. They used living weapons, engineered creatures and a religious vocabulary that identified outsiders as infidels. Jedi initially found the invaders difficult to perceive through the Force, creating an unfamiliar problem for an Order that had recently been rebuilt.

Belkadan and Helska IV

An advance Yuuzhan Vong force attacked remote locations and concealed its infrastructure while Republic authorities sought explanations. Danni Quee's experiences at ExGal-4 brought evidence of the threat to the wider New Republic. The invaders' first moves targeted knowledge, transportation and local defenses.

The limits of a familiar galactic order

The Republic's political institutions were designed to negotiate disputes between member worlds, not respond immediately to an unfamiliar civilization advancing from outside known routes. Early warnings competed with ordinary policy disagreements, allowing the invaders to build momentum.

Anthropological assessment

An invasion is also an encounter between societies with fundamentally different technologies, religions and classifications of life. The Vong's self-understanding cannot be reduced to biology alone: its political ambitions, coercive institutions and theological claims shaped its acts of violence.
