Life beyond the crew slot

An aging Imperial doctor and former intelligence asset who experiments on the rakghoul plague, transforms himself, and never reveals his complete professional history.

The unreliable personnel file of a career intelligence operative

The SWTOR Holonet introduces Doctor Eckard Lokin as a legend in the espionage profession, but begins by admitting that even Imperial Intelligence lacks a complete account of his life. His homeworld is unknown, although Dromund Kaas is presumed. His precise age is also unknown, with the publisher offering a mid-sixties estimate rather than a verified birth date.

This deliberate uncertainty matters. Intelligence services ordinarily produce records about other people, yet Lokin is able to remain partly undocumented within the institution that employed him. A biography should not convert assumptions in a classified file into certain facts. His missing records tell readers something about secrecy, access and power.

His old alias, Fixer Fifteen, suggests a professional role in clandestine operations. The Holonet links him to the Sith Empire and describes decades of service, while acknowledging that the operations themselves remain poorly documented. This is enough to establish his long career without inventing every mission he might have undertaken.

The character's age, appearance and polite conversational style can conceal the underlying issue: his skills belong to an apparatus of surveillance and political violence. He is capable of presenting himself as a helpful older doctor while understanding the methods by which organizations conceal and manipulate information.

Research, military medicine and the moral cost of experiments

Lokin is described officially as a brilliant doctor and geneticist associated with controversial experiments. The Holonet raises the possibility that some of his work contributed to early Imperial human-augmentation research, but refuses to establish its exact scope. That uncertainty needs to be preserved rather than transformed into a documented list of victims or technologies.

Military research is not the same as ordinary clinical care. A field medic faces a duty to people in immediate need, whereas a clandestine research program may prioritize future operational advantage. Lokin has expertise relevant to both activities, and the tension makes him substantially different from Elara Dorne, who objects to abuses inside Imperial institutions.

The launch-era Holonet says he favors technology, clever solutions and long-term thinking while disliking ideology and honesty. These are game characterization fields rather than a full ethical philosophy, but they support a portrait of someone willing to weigh outcomes and strategic benefits instead of accepting fixed declarations of principle.

When he becomes a companion, a player may depend on Lokin for support while recognizing that he might withhold details about his experiments. The relationship becomes an exercise in trust under imperfect information, not merely a convenient excuse for a mechanically specialized healer.

Taris and the rakghoul plague

The Imperial Agent encounters Lokin amid investigations on Taris, where ruined settlements, dangerous laboratories and rakghoul outbreaks make biological knowledge a form of power. The companion story reveals his fascination with the rakghoul virus and the way it changes an infected body.

Later game records, including the Alliance recruitment description preserved in Jedipedia's game database, explain that Lokin introduced a modified variant of the pathogen into his own DNA. In SWTOR's fiction, this allows him to shift between human and rakghoul appearances while retaining intelligence and personality. It is a fictional mechanism, not a medically plausible or real-world claim about viruses.

Self-experimentation gives his story an unusual form of consent: the scientist is himself a subject, but that does not automatically justify experimenting on other people. The wider ethical questions concern safety, informed choice, uncontrolled spread and the misuse of biological transformation as an operational technique.

Taris is a particularly appropriate setting for these issues. Its archaeological and military layers place scientific practice alongside abandoned infrastructure and populations living with the consequences of historical catastrophe. Rakghoul research becomes one more attempt to control a dangerous landscape.

An Imperial Agent's useful but unsettling ally

Lokin joins the Imperial Agent's crew, sharing space with Kaliyo Djannis, Vector Hyllus, Raina Temple and SCORPIO. All participate in a profession that requires secrecy, but their relationships to authority differ sharply. Kaliyo thrives on manipulation. Vector tries to serve both a state and a Killik nest. Raina views service through military loyalty. SCORPIO demands control over her own technological future.

Lokin approaches the same circumstances as a researcher and veteran operative. His familiarity with hidden motives often creates a contest of interpretations with colleagues who conceal information for different reasons. His courtesy makes him more difficult to read than an openly threatening enemy.

The choice to work with the Agent is pragmatic. It offers access to a mobile ship, missions and interesting research while giving the Agent medical and scientific expertise. The arrangement can be productive even when neither side reveals every relevant fact. It is therefore important not to describe a companion as automatically and unconditionally trusted simply because the game permits them to be selected.

The original Holonet lists a blaster pistol, vibroknife and crew-skill bonuses. These are historical mechanics from the original game design, not reliable present-day build recommendations. His research history and participation in the story give the character his significance.

Retirement and the Alliance's unusual recruitment

The expansion era brings Lokin back through the Alliance Alert A Kindly Old Monster. Official SWTOR Game Update 4.1 patch notes refer to the mission and to its delivery after early Alliance recruitment prerequisites. Later update notes still mention rakghoul behavior during the same Alert, providing publisher evidence that the character's transformation remains relevant.

The in-game Alliance contact record says Lokin spent time in the Alderaanian countryside after the Agent's disappearance during the war with Zakuul. This account frames his apparent retirement as another stage in a long career that repeatedly resists simple categories: medical practice, espionage, research and withdrawal from duty.

Recruitment mechanics and story progression should be kept distinct. A player looking for Lokin's alert needs current mission requirements from a maintained game guide, not an old unqualified promise that any character can recruit him immediately. His return is documented, but the steps that expose the mission belong in the site's quest walkthrough.

Lokin's continued presence challenges a frequent assumption about older characters in action games. His influence is based less on physical vigor than on accumulated knowledge, skill in managing secrets and a willingness to treat even his own body as a research instrument. That makes him a valuable subject for institutional and ethical analysis.

IDS anthropological assessment

Culture, authority and identity

Lokin is a case study in administrative opacity. The organization that classified other people's lives could not fully reconstruct one of its own long-serving operatives. His presumed birthplace and estimated age should remain labeled uncertainties rather than unquestioned biographical data.

His self-experimentation also separates personal permission from institutional accountability. A person can choose to undergo risk without establishing that a technique is safe for civilians, colleagues or an environment. The fictional rakghoul transformation makes the tension visible through a dramatic bodily change.

Professional knowledge becomes bargaining power in the Agent's crew. The ability to diagnose, conceal or interpret information can create dependence even without formal rank. Lokin's politeness and age do not remove that unequal access to evidence.

The Alliance recruitment story raises another question: does retirement end a person's participation in an institution, or simply change the conditions of their next negotiation? The distinction is essential for a character whose career consists of partial disclosures and shifting affiliations.

The interpretation concerns fictional institutions and is authored by IDS, not published as developer commentary or a description of real-world communities.

MAKE A SELECTION

What principle comes first?

Four evidence checks

Is Lokin's birth on Dromund Kaas established fact?

No. The original Holonet describes Dromund Kaas as a presumption; his homeworld is unknown.

Was every controversial experiment under his direction identified?

No. The publisher explicitly says the extent of his participation is unclear.

Can he transform into a rakghoul in SWTOR?

Yes. The Agent storyline and Alliance companion records document the modified experimental transformation.

Does an Alliance Alert feature Lokin?

Yes. Official 4.1 patch notes name A Kindly Old Monster and describe its recruitment availability.
