Continuity and method: This story is Star Wars Legends, not current Canon. Its published comic chronology places it in 137 ABY. Anthropology and ethics are clearly original analysis, not invented scenes or dialogue from the comic.

An earlier restoration project becomes a poisoned landscape

Wayland was selected for the Ossus Project, a Jedi-supported effort to heal worlds devastated by the Yuuzhan Vong War. Led in part by Kol Skywalker and Yuuzhan Vong Shapers, the project initially showed promising results. Sith infiltrators then sabotaged the living technology, creating dangerous mutations and discrediting the cooperation between Jedi and Yuuzhan Vong. Years later, the damaged landscape still shaped the lives of Wayland's inhabitants. The world was not simply a convenient jungle setting for a chase; it carried the consequences of political sabotage against ecological restoration.

Maladi returns to the site of the sabotage

In 137 ABY Darth Maladi collaborated with Zenoc Quah, a rogue Yuuzhan Vong Shaper who had helped undermine the original project. Quah used a former terraforming laboratory to engineer dangerous biological creatures. Maladi wanted to capture Cade Skywalker and turn his extraordinary Force healing ability into a tool for controlling the One Sith during the succession crisis after Darth Krayt's apparent death. To do so she created a trap that would exploit Cade's attachments and anger. The laboratory thus served as both a site of coerced experimentation and a strategic asset in an intra-Sith power struggle.

A bounty brings the Mynock to Wayland

The pirate Rav offered Cade Skywalker and his companions a valuable bounty connected to Fionah Ti, a researcher on Wayland seeking evidence of the Ossus Project's sabotage. Cade, Jariah Syn and Deliah Blue traveled aboard the Mynock expecting a comparatively straightforward job. They instead encountered hostile Vongformed creatures and became separated. Fionah's work to restore victims of the mutations gave the planet another social story: not all people associated with Yuuzhan Vong techniques were saboteurs. Distinguishing humanitarian repair from biological coercion was central to the conflict.

Deliah Blue is used to pressure Cade

Maladi's allies captured Deliah and imprisoned her in a Yuuzhan Vong Embrace of Pain. Maladi implanted a harmful living growth on her back and made her suffering a means of compelling Cade's cooperation. The biot's effects were not a freely chosen treatment. Her captors deliberately transformed a person into leverage over someone who loved her. Maladi hoped Cade would use power in anger and thereby become more susceptible to the dark side. The threat operated through family-like trust and bodily vulnerability, not merely through military force.

Wolf Sazen and the rescuers reach the laboratory

Jedi Master Wolf Sazen, together with Jariah Syn and Fionah Ti, reached the compound while Cade confronted Maladi. Quah released experimental Vongforms to stop them. In the fighting Jariah Syn killed Quah after Quah rejected an opportunity to surrender. Fionah's specialized knowledge of Vong biology helped the party understand the danger, although it did not allow her to shut down all the Sith's technology. The source shows improvised cooperation across professions: the former Jedi's companions needed fighting skills, technical knowledge, and medical attention simultaneously.

Cade refuses Maladi's final manipulation

Maladi tried to drive Cade toward dark-side healing by forcing him to focus on Deliah's pain and his fear of losing her. Their Force confrontation revealed Maladi's own fear that she could not control the powerful beings she hoped to use. Unable to subdue him, Maladi withdrew and activated explosives to destroy the lab. The attack nearly killed Cade and Deliah and threatened the rescuers as well. A controlled scientific institution, once corrupted into a weapons laboratory, ended as a trap designed to destroy its own evidence.

A different form of healing

Cade remained with Deliah and used the light side of the Force to remove the dangerous biot while sheltering them from the laboratory's destruction. This was important to his personal development because he had often approached healing through anger, fear, and the desire to force a particular outcome. Wolf Sazen's influence helped him choose a way of acting that depended on care rather than domination. The story does not establish that every physical effect of Vongforming across Wayland was cured or that the damaged planet was restored by this individual rescue.

Anthropological assessment: knowledge, coercion, and repair

Wayland's history illustrates a crucial distinction between technical ability and moral responsibility. The same broad field of biological shaping could support planetary restoration or be transformed into a technology of terror. Its political use depended on who directed the work, how consent was obtained, what safety obligations existed, and who bore the risk. Maladi's manipulation relied on turning care into a vulnerability. Cade's response refused to treat the person he wanted to save as a tool for his own power. These themes are an editorial interpretation of the narrative, not new statements attributed to unseen in-universe characters.

Timeline placement and art provenance

The Wayland trap unfolds in Star Wars: Legacy (2006) #43–46, with the laboratory confrontation and the rescue of Deliah shown in issue #46, published March 31, 2010. Its in-universe year is 137 ABY. The art shown is the authentic Dark Horse cover of issue #46, which depicts the hostile Vongformed setting. The sabotage of the Ossus Project around 126 ABY has its own timeline entry and should not be confused with this much later trap.
