Later Legends chronology places Jolee Bindo's retreat to Kashyyyk's Shadowlands around 3976 BBY. Jolee had withdrawn from the Jedi after the Great Sith War. Freyyr, the Wookiee chieftain and father of Zaalbar and Chuundar, also lived in the Shadowlands after Chuundar displaced him, but the sources do not securely establish that he arrived in the same year as Jolee.

What the historical record establishes

The later Legends chronology connects Jolee's retreat to approximately 3976 BBY, but Freyyr's arrival is not securely dated to that same year. Jolee separated himself from formal Jedi institutions of his own accord. Freyyr, by contrast, lost recognized Wookiee leadership during his son Chuundar's ascent and cooperation with Czerka. The pair shared terrain but not the same legal, social or personal reason for living there.

People, institutions and consequences

Treating both stories as a single generic exile loses the distinction between voluntary withdrawal and political displacement. The forest floor functioned as marginal territory whose physical danger could also reduce the reach of official surveillance. Meanwhile Czerka exploited conflicts among Wookiee leaders to expand the capture and sale of Wookiees. No scene establishes that the two exiles acted as an organized political alliance at the moment of their withdrawals.

Jolee chooses institutional distance

Jolee's exile was rooted in disillusionment rather than expulsion. After the Great Sith War, he had lost confidence in the Jedi Council's handling of his own failures and in the neat categories through which the Order explained moral life.

Living in the Shadowlands gave him physical distance from the institution without requiring him to abandon compassion or the Force.

Freyyr loses political authority

Freyyr's exile was different. Chuundar's rise displaced him from Wookiee leadership and placed a pro-Czerka faction in a stronger position.

Political defeat therefore mapped directly onto geography: the former chieftain moved downward into the dangerous forest while the collaborationist regime controlled the settlements above.

Kashyyyk's vertical landscape becomes social geography

Kashyyyk's enormous trees create literal layers of life. Settlements occupy the safer upper regions while the Shadowlands below are darker and more dangerous.

The setting makes political marginalization spatially visible. To fall out of institutional life is, in these stories, also to descend.

What is the biggest difference between Jolee and Freyyr?

Agency. Jolee largely chooses withdrawal from the Jedi. Freyyr is displaced through political conflict. They share a location without sharing the same meaning of exile.

Why does the Shadowlands setting matter?

Because geography does narrative work. The lower forest becomes a place for people pushed outside ordinary institutions, whether voluntarily or through defeat.

Anthropological assessment

The Shadowlands show how landscapes can become social categories. Dangerous terrain is not merely background; it can absorb exiles, fugitives, and political losers whom more orderly spaces reject.

Jolee and Freyyr also demonstrate that 'exile' should not be treated as one universal experience. Voluntary retreat and coerced displacement can look similar on a map while carrying completely different moral meanings.

Chosen retreat and political removal

Jolee Bindo and Freyyr withdrew to Kashyyyk’s lower forest under very different circumstances. Jolee was a former Jedi who had distanced himself from the Order, its procedures and his earlier experiences. Freyyr was a Wookiee leader displaced by his son Chuundar, whose relationship with Czerka helped reshape the community’s power structure. Calling both men 'exiles' is useful as a comparison, but treating their situations as identical would erase the distinction between voluntary withdrawal and loss of political authority.

Forest geography and unequal power

The Shadowlands were a difficult environment beneath Kashyyyk’s inhabited tree levels. They provided cover and physical distance from the institutions governing above, but refuge could also mean vulnerability. The planet’s economic history in Knights of the Old Republic includes an outside corporation’s involvement in the capture and trafficking of Wookiees. This is not a story about an inherently divided species. It is about a local governing conflict intensified by external extraction and unequal opportunities to resist.

What the game dates—and what it does not

The c. 3976 BBY placement applies to Jolee's later chronology and is sometimes also assigned to Freyyr; other sources connect Freyyr's displacement to events nearer Revan's 3956 BBY visit. The game's scenes are not date cards for both arrivals. The primary RPG establishes the relationship between these characters, the Shadowlands and the crisis surrounding Chuundar. The story’s player choices also mean that not every possible sequence of dialogue should be treated as the single historical route. For a more precise assessment, the related Jolee and Freyyr dossiers separate each individual’s biography.

Research judgment: Do Jolee and Freyyr have the same reasons for entering the Shadowlands?

Explanation: No. Jolee chose a distance from formal Jedi life; Freyyr was removed from Wookiee political leadership during a dispute involving Chuundar and Czerka.

Published evidence

The game establishes that Jolee Bindo lived apart from the Jedi in Kashyyyk's Shadowlands and that Freyyr was deposed by his son Chuundar. Revan encounters both men by 3956 BBY. Later chronologies put Jolee's arrival around 3976 BBY, but source summaries do not agree on when Freyyr entered exile.

Institutions and culture

These are two distinct kinds of exclusion. Jolee's loss of confidence led to largely voluntary withdrawal; Freyyr was deprived of political authority during a dispute tied to Czerka's enslavement of Wookiees. Placing both men on one forest floor does not make their experiences equivalent.

What remains unverified

Some Legends summaries group both exiles under 3976 BBY, while other references attach Freyyr's exile to the later 3956 BBY Kashyyyk crisis. No exact shared arrival date should be asserted without independent primary support.

Check the historical record: Do the available sources prove Jolee and Freyyr arrived in the Shadowlands in the same year?

Explanation: No. Their presence by the events of Knights of the Old Republic is established, but Freyyr's precise exile year remains disputed.
