An unauthorized search begins

After Darth Wredd's actions on Carreras, the newly created Galactic Federation Triumvirate was reluctant to pursue him as aggressively as Imperial Knight Jao Assam believed necessary. Jao had experienced a Force vision in which the rogue Sith threatened Empress Marasiah Fel. His superiors ordered him to return to duty rather than pursue the matter himself. Jao and Ania Solo defied those orders, fled the Star Destroyer Animus, and followed a lead toward the planet Nalyd. Their decision created a conflict between individual conscience and military obligation.

Dieben faces execution

On Nalyd they discovered that Wredd's accomplice Dieben had been returned to his homeworld and was awaiting execution for prior crimes. The accusation involved serious violence, including the deaths of civilians in a public transport incident. Ania and Jao hoped that questioning Dieben would reveal Wredd's location. Local authorities refused their request to delay the punishment. The protagonists now faced a choice between respecting Nalydian legal procedure and attempting to remove a prisoner whose information might prevent a future attack.

Escape on a giant Nalydian spider

Ania attempted to free Dieben. During the ensuing chase she commandeered a giant spider-like animal used by Nalydian residents for transport. The creatures were suited to travel among the world's rocky pinnacles, illustrating how local people adapted transportation to demanding terrain. Guards gave pursuit using similar animals. Ania's improvised escape was not a carefully coordinated rescue operation. The danger increased as she and her companions lost control of the route and fell toward an area of swamp below.

A lead dies before he speaks

Dieben was impaled on a sharp plant during the fall and died without giving Ania and Jao the information they sought. Both pursuers survived. Their attempted intervention had failed to recover a live witness and had put them in direct conflict with local enforcement officials. The incident should not be rewritten as a successful interrogation, an orderly prisoner transfer, or a fight against Darth Wredd himself. The rogue Sith did not personally appear to duel the pair at Nalyd.

A clue points toward Dac

Ania and Jao reached a resolution with the Nalydian authorities and returned Dieben's body. Officials revealed that the condemned man had been traveling toward Dac, the devastated homeworld of the Mon Calamari, and had powerful contacts there. The information gave the fugitives their next direction. When they reached the Dac system, they discovered a pirate and slave operation at the old Mon Calamari Orbital Shipyards. That later crisis has its own article because its victims, perpetrators and rescue strategy were different.

Anthropological assessment: local law and outside priorities

The Nalyd episode is a study in overlapping obligations. Jao believed stopping Wredd mattered more than following his Imperial Knight orders. The Nalydian authorities believed their own criminal process mattered even when offworld visitors claimed urgent intelligence needs. Ania's intervention exposed the unequal weight outsiders can give to local rules when they regard their own mission as exceptional. The story does not prove that Nalydian institutions were illegitimate, nor that the protagonists were free of responsibility for the consequences of their intervention.

Artwork and evidence

Star Wars: Legacy (2013) #7–8 by Corinna Bechko and Gabriel Hardman provides the central narrative. The published Dark Horse cover for #7 depicts Ania and Jao in Nalyd's dangerous environment and is an appropriate original visual reference. The date is approximately 138 ABY. This should be read after the Cadomai duel and before the liberation of the Mon Calamari Shipyards, without assuming that every event took place on the same day.
